David Kirke in Newfoundland - Mar 24, 1645/46. To the Right Honourable the Lords and Commons assembled in Parliamen. The humble petition of the merchants, owners of shippinge, seamen and fishermen of the porte of Plymouth. sheweth that the fishinge trade for the Newfoundland before this de------ warre was the seminarie of seamen, and cheefe supporte of trade ---- partes, that your petitioners haveinge by the blesinge of God --- some relaxation from their hostile imployments, and desirous to --- the said trade are soe much discouraged by the insolencies and oppressions of Sir David Kirke knt., a nototious malignant and others --- planters in the said Newfoundland, who detayninge the principall places for fishinge, burning their stages, and train fattes, taking away ---- salte boats, and other necessaries, settinge up of tavernes and tipping houses whereby the seamen are much deboyshed and threatninge --- --- fishinge season to seize your petitioners shippes for the kinge ---- rebells as hee the said Sir David tearmed them, contraie to lawe and His Majesties commission graunted anno 1633 for the well governinge of the inhabitantes of Newfoundland aforesaid, as appeares by the annexed.
