This is the earliest photograph of Benno. He was named "Benno Harry"after his maternal grandfather Baruch Hersh Schwartz.

I know that he would not be pleased that I am including this photograph, but it is typical of the times. He was a handsome young fellow.

I don't know the grade here, but Benno is second from the left in the second row.

A little older here. I would guess twelve. Looks like a studious fellow.

Another amazing school photo. See Benno, He's third in the row closest to the viewer.

I would guess this shows him in his high school years--late teens maybe.

I know that he served in the CCC during the depression. I would bet these photos show him while he was in the corps.

Another photo taken during the same time period.

Benno served in the Air Force during World War II. He was with the second wave that entered France after D-Day. Here he is as the foreign soldier in Paris.

Great color photograph of the young soldier.

Life and opportunities in civilian life didn't suit him. My Dad tried to make a retail grocer out of him. It didn't work. That's Benno on the left.

It was back into the service and training to be an officer.

Then on to exotic places like Japan (Benno is on the far side holding his camera). Post-war duty also took him to England, Turkey, Germany , and Canada.

Great shot of a guy and his plane.

Several good portraits track him through the years.

This one is especially good.

He was always our favorite Uncle. He is loving and generous. I wish he lived closer so we could see him more often. He's a great story teller.

And lastly, here he is in one of those characteristic photos on our living room sofa. Benno with his sisters. My Mom on the right, and Aunt Esther on the left.

*Colonel Benno H. Stein died October 28, 1999. He was 87*
