Knot magic is used mostly to either bind something, or to set an intention into an item. It's a flexible spell working, I've used it in the two crochet blankets I made for my children while pregnant to put in health, peace, happiness and love.
IF you are willing to dispose of the 'knots' afterwards (in other words don't do this with anything you want to keep or give to someone) some of lifes little difficulties yield to being sewn up into a bag and buried or burned.
Cords can be knotted to bind a formal spell... my coven has made it a tradition at Beltane to make knotted cords with beads and feather, etc, to bind our intentions for the year. This is a lot of fun to do, before casting the circle we get our 'knotting' supplies together (cords, ribbons, beads, feathers, shells, bells etc...) and then we cast the Circle. After the formal Beltane invocations we sit around braiding and knotting, using the colors of the cords and the various items to symbolize our seperate goals. When we've all finished our cords we pile them op the alter, and raise a cone to empower the spell. Everyone takes their knotting home with them. Mine I usually keep on my night table and move it to my alter when I'm doing work at home. After the year, the day before Beltane, the cords are either burned or buried in our gradens.
Knot magic can be combined with other spellforms, also, in a formal setting. The old knotted cord and broken candle route to rid oneself of an unwanted person comes to mind.
In my crochet I do a lot of 'setting of intention'. While I'm working the knots into the finished product I meditate quietly on the perpose of the item. I've lost two shawls and a large blanket to my daughter, she says they 'feel good'.
I've been told that on an old spell using a knotted, tangled cord to symbolize the difficulty and ritually cutting it with your bolline to free yourself.
Secondly knot magic can be used for any tupe of spell work or even prayer.
Color isn't all that important but if you are into color symbology then get a goot long piece of string, rope, whatever in a color that represents what you are working for. It's purpose is similar to that of the catholic rosary except you make the knots.
By knot of One, the spell's begun x---------------------------------------------
This is the starting point, the initialization of your power for the spell/prayer, kinda like turning a car key in the ignition.
By knot of Two, it cometh true x--------------------------------------------x
This is the ending, the final outcome that you must keep in mind while working you magic.
By knot of Three, so mote it be x---------------------x----------------------x
This is your sealing of the final outcome to be as you visualize.
By knot of Four, this power I store x---------x-----------x----------------------x
This is obvious
By knot of Fine, this spell's alive x---------x-----------x----------x-----------x
This is the activation of the power to the end of your desires.
By knot of Six, this spell I fix x----x----x-----------x----------x-----------x
This is the programming og the energy to the end of your desires.
By knot of Seven, events I'll leaven x----x----x-----------x----------x-----x-----x
This is the actions you will do mundanely to achieve your goals.
By knot of Eight, it will be Fate x----x----x-----x-----x----------x-----x-----x
This is sealing all work that you are doing now and later in the mundane sense to the end of your desires.
By knot of Nine, what's done is mine x----x----x-----x-----x----x-----x-----x-----x
This is where all your energy is place into the work involved, with the visualization of having it firmly as you wish.
These knots store the power for you to release at any time you wish. The best way to release it is to burn it. Another way of unleashing it is untying the knots in the same way you tied them.
Many thanks to Katherine Wintersnight and Karen Dales on ITCnet message base Occult for my education in Knot Magic!
