Roger - 11/07/00 22:53:45 My Email:[email protected] Favorite Emperor: Claudius | Comments: Claudius is one of the most engimatic Roman emperors. I have viewed the BBC I Claudius series many times (it's become an annual event). I love the idea of an underestimated, seeming ineffectual person rising to imperial power and showing the world that he could be a competent administrator. What is contemporaries forgot what that he had many years to observe the imperial family and the workings of Roman government. I can't help but feel that it was more than an accident that the Praetorian Guard hailed him as emperor ... he was a logical candidate from a family standpoint, but I have a theory that there more preparation than history may tell us and Claudius may well have participated in the end of Caligula's reign more than the history books tell us. |

I have an argument with a friend of mine about how one would pronounce "I Claudius" Mr. A says it is "EEE Claudius," because that is how the PBS series said it. Mr. B says it can be either "Eye Claudius" for a Greek, or "EEE Clau io for a Roman. Comments? |
