Semantics and Discourse

A Natural Language Processing Perspective

published as:
Vol. 9 of Studies in Machine Translation and Natural Language Processing, Official Publications of the European Communities, Luxembourg, 1995. (192 pp.)

This book is an outcome of the European project Formal Semantics for Discourse [*], which investigated discourse models based on semantic research in the fields of logic and the philosophy of language, theoretical and computational linguistics, cognitive science and artificial intelligence. After an introduction by the project coordinator, the volume provides a multidisciplinary survey of existing approaches to contextualized meaning and discourse, together with an assessment of their relevance for applications to natural language processing. The articles were published after reviews by an external group of academics, including Andrea Bonomi, Paolo Casalegno, Walter Castelnovo and Gennaro Chierchia (all from the University of Milan), Paul Dekker (University of Amsterdam) and Ad Foolen (University of Nijmegen).
