Abstract:

This is the first introductory book on unification-based generative grammars and related linguistic theories that was written in Italian and published in Italy. It was adopted as a textbook for advanced students following Valerio Allegranza's course of General Linguistics at the University of Torino, Faculty of Languages. The exposition ranges from traditional context-free phrase structure grammar (and the corresponding component of transformational grammars) to those modern grammars that are unification-based (or, more generally, constraint-based), with special reference to HPSG, Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammar. Both the generative treatment of basic syntactic phenomena and their logical semantic interpretation are presented in accordance with such grammars, focussing the exemplification on Italian data.
