PREPARATION OF SPAGYRICAL REMEDIES

TINCTURES

Tinctures are elaborated by introducing the plant into a mixture of 25% of spirit of wine (ethyl alcohol of grape, not of cane) and 75% of rainwater. If it is not possible to obtain alcohol of grape, one could use vodka of good quality. The ideal is that the alcohol does not have strange preservatives, coloring or other chemical products. Personally for me is not easy get alcohol of grape. I use mescal that is a natural ferment from the plant of the same name that grows in the desert zone of the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Durango. I take the mescal and subject it to seven continuous distillations in order to extract the ethanol formed during fermentation, that is 90 to 95% strength.

You may use any part of the plant because you extract the active principles and the ethanol acts like a natural preservative, making the tinctures last up to two years in storage.

1.- 200 g of dry plant or 600 g of fresh plant per liter of mixture as follows: pure ethanol 25% and water of rain 75% ( 250 ml of ethanol + 750 ml rain water), or, a bottle of vodka of 750 ml is diluted that comes to 37.5% with 375 ml of rain water. Put into glass jar filled to no more than 2/3 parts of its capacity, leaving 1/3 free for circulation of vapors. Seal tightly.

2.- Begin digestion of the mixture at 40ºC in an incubation chamber, or in a bath of sand that rests on an electric grill or another safe and suitable method to maintain the required temperature for 40 days. Shake carefully without uncovering the flask, twice per day.

3.- At the end of the digestion the jar is uncovered carefully and the tincture is filtered through muslin cloth or a filter for gelatin. Pour the tincture into an amber colored flask and cover tightly.

4.- Put the plant parts into an iron or steel pan and let dew with alcohol. By heating over fire or in an oven decrease everything to ashes until calcined and white.

Take the calcined matter and dissolve in a minimum amount of rainwater and allow evaporating until dry. Here you have obtained the Salt from the plant.

5.- The obtained salt is added to the tincture. Agitate very well and allow to circulate in a pelican for 40 days at 40ºC shaking twice per day by moving the flask circularly. If you do not have a pelican, you can join two round bottom flasks, one of 500 ml with another of 250 ml by means of a connector (male-male). If this is not possible, get a gallon wine bottles green or amber in color and out the mixture to circulate but do not fill more than 1/3 of their volume.

6.- At the end of this period filters through cotton and place the tincture in an amber flask and seal well. The rest is discarded. It is the Caput Mortum.

Doses: 5 ml three times per day. The tinctures must always be diluted in water.

For use in alcoholism, minor children under 10 years, as well as pregnant and sick persons with gastric inflammations or liverworts put the 5 ml of tincture in a cup and add 25 ml of water boiling, allow to cool. The alcohol will then be evaporated.

Caution: NEVER USE METALIC, INDUSTRIAL, DENATURED METHYL OR ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL BECAUSE THEY ARE EXTREMELY TOXIC.

Spagyrics only permits the use of Spirits of Wine or fermented alcoholic beverages

Prepared as above.

SYRUPS

To 500 ml of tincture add 375 g of virginal honey. Warm and shake constantly until they are integrated perfectly and allow cooling.

Once cooled filter through muslin and place in an amber or blue bottle sealed with a flask plug. Do not use plugs of thread, because the syrups tend to ferment and bottle can explode.

Dose: a tablespoon in tea every six hours

OIL OF INFUSION

The active principles of plants can be extracted by oil for use in massage, cream and unguents. The oil of infusion can be preserved a year if kept in a cool and dark place, although they are more effective if they are produced in small amounts and used quickly.

Two techniques exist: the hot method is appropriate for plants like consuelda, pamplina or the romero; and the cold method is used with grasses like the calendula or the grass of San Juan.

If possible, the process in order to obtain oil with cold infusion is to add new grass to the oil of an already elaborated infusion, allow to rest 40 days before filtering it.

Infusion in hot:

250 g of dry plant or 750 g of fresh put into 500 ml of oil of sunflower in glass and warmed in Mary’s bath for three hours. Filter when still hot through muslin or gelatin filters. Allow to cool and pack in an amber glass and plug from a float bottle.

Infusion in cold:

Fill a large glass or mason jar with the plants packed tightly and cover completely with sunflower oil. Seal the top and leave in a sunny window or in a hothouse for 40 days.

Filter through muslin and then repeat the previous steps using new grass and leave it another 40 days. Filter through muslin and store.

CREAMS

A cream is a mixture of water with softened fat or oil that can be absorbed by the skin.

Prepare the following way:

Melt 25 g of wax of bees with 25 g of anhydrous lanolin; add 100 ml of oil of infusion and 50 ml of tincture shaking constantly. Filter the mixture and store packed into jars that fit the quantity of cream without a lot of excess room.

Another option: 25 g of bees wax, 25 g of anhydrous lanolin, 70 ml of glycerin, 80 ml of water and 30 g of the dry plant.

Melt the fat in the water in Mary’s bath, the plant is added and warmed over a slow firer for three hours, after that filter hot through muslin and allow to cool, pack tightly into a jar.

UNGUENTS

An unguent contains a single fat or oil and no water. They are not absorbed but form a protective layer.

Unguents are used on skin that is weak or soft, or when it is necessary protect it from moisture, such as diaper rash… Formerly the unguents were made with animal fats, but now they have been adapted to use bees wax…In spagyrics it is not valid is to use petroleum based products like Vaseline or paraffin wax.

Put 500 g of bees wax in a glass receptacle in Mary’s bath and melt. Then add 60 g of dry plant and heat for 2 hours.

Filter through muslin while warm and then cool. Pack tightly in a jar and seal.

An alternative method is to fuse 25 g of bees wax with 25 g of anhydrous lanolin. Add 100 ml of oil of infusion and the mixture is poured into a jar while still hot.

In another section the spagyrical extracts and essences are discussed because they are finer compounds and with a delicate preparation.
