THE RAMBLAS OF BARCELONA
The Ramblas are the one of the most famous thorouhgfares in Europe. Not for their buildings, which are of scant historic interest, although they are not to be despised. It is their human interest which makes the Ramblas unique. Once the bed of a mountain torrent, they have come to be the heart and soul of the city. They are the meeting-place, promenade, park, market-place and pulse of the town all in one. They zig-zag along, bordered by houses of every style and size, crowded with hurrying business people, dawdling window-shoppers. The pavement cafes are usually full, and so are the chairs that can be hired under the trees in the centre of the boulevard. There are the bulfight fans who gather beneath the Arco del Teatro;the football fans by the Canaletas fountain; the chirp and twitter of birds in cages or free at the stails of the bird-market.....
