Moonless Night

Once upon a moonless night,
when freezing winds were blowing,
two spots within my room were glowing --
glowing with an eerie light.

What they were I could not tell;
I could not move for fear.
All I could think was, "What is here,
some demon-thing from Hell?"

It gave a ghostly wail, then paced
steadily toward my bed.
I felt the blood pound in my head
as I saw the thing I faced.

I reached out my hand, then gave it a pat;
the "demon-thing" was Tom, my cat.
