Links to the Outside World

Following are links I have collected in my cyber-journeys that primarily reflect my interests in reading and writing. I hope you will find them as useful and/or fun as I do. On a more personal note, if you want to know more about me and my family, you can take a look at the home page my husband maintains. Some of my friends who also maintain home pages or blogs include David Avera, Rachel Bevins, Todd Bullock, Katherine and Rodney Durr, Bob Holden, Chris and Alexis Long, Julie and Mohamed Noor, David Oxford, Carol Johnson Thomas, Charles Twardy, Laura Twardy (a.k.a. "the Lradryad"), Yvonne Yang, The Asian American Journalists Association, The Lost Agency Ramblers, Psi Phi at Virginia, The Shire of Isenfir, and Twin Roses Designs (Andréa and Garry Wakely).

ABOUT AUTHORS:

Some of my favorite living authors who have official web sites are Orson Scott Card, Charles de Lint, and Robin McKinley. Evan Reynolds also maintains an impressive fan page on fantasy author Patricia McKillip.

BOOK COLLECTIONS AND LISTS:

The On-Line Books Page is a directory of books that "can be freely read right on the Internet," to quote the page owner. It is truly an impressive collection of online books (or links to online books) that can be searched according to author name, century, genre, and other categories. Another good source for online books, especially poetic works, is the Bartleby Library.

Amy Sheldon's Recommended Fantasy Author List is a good place to check for what series your favorite fantasy authors have written and to find recommendations for more authors to try.

Soon's Historical Fiction Site (HistFiction.net) is an impressive database of "historical novels"; i.e. novels that have been researched so they are historically accurate in terms of the idioms and details used in the books. There are also resources for writers and links to forums and websites that focus on historical fiction.

INFERTILITY AND PREGNANCY LOSS:

During a very difficult time in my life I ended up doing a lot of research on these topics. Some of the more reputable web sites I found include the International Council on Infertility Information and Dissemination, Inc. (INCIID), Resolve, The Compassionate Friends, Inc., and SHARE Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support, Inc.

RESEARCH AND REFERENCE TOOLS:

As a writer/poet/webmaster, I take copyrights very seriously. The issue of copyrights and the Internet is a complicated one because much of the legislation surrounding copyrights hasn't quite caught up to technology. In researching the issue, I have come across some excellent web sites, including The Copyright Website and Introduction to Intellectual Property Rights (a publication of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Information Programs) that give a good overview of what constitutes "fair use," what is considered "copyrightable," and other issues. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office also maintains a FAQ section on their home page about trademarks, and the The U.S. Copyright Office has an entire home page that explains how to register works and contains most of the application forms in PDF format.

As a dabbler in the creative writing field I occasionally visit the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) website, which contains lots of tips on writing, marketing, and publishing.

The HTML Writers Guild is a good place to look if you have some basic proficiency in HTML but want to network with other "web authors" or take some online classes in JavaScript, graphics design and that sort of thing.
