Home Early

Today, rather than going in to the office, I had a class at the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington. The class let out about 3:45 in the afternoon, and I got home about 5 rather than at my usual 7:30 or 8. My family was very happy to see me home so early; my son flung open the door between the house and the garage then jumped up and down while yelling "Mama!" and my husband gave me a big hug when I got inside. It was very nice to get home so early; usually by the time I get home my son is ready for bed, so I really don't have a chance to see him. Because I got home so early today, though, my son and I were able to go for a walk around the neighborhood then play in the backyard while my husband took a well-deserved break from watching him all afternoon. The three of us also had dinner together as a family, which has been a rare occurrence of late.

Tomorrow will be the final day of my class, so I expect to get home early once again. I'm looking forward to that. I wish I could get home early more often, but my work doesn't finish until 6 at the earliest, and my commute via public transportation is almost 90 minutes long. I suppose I could ask if I could telecommute more often, but my office is already being very accommodating about my work schedule, and I think a physical presence in the office is helpful in resolving problems and maintaining good relations amongst co-workers. I will have to think about this problem some more.
