Cat Under Fire

Shirley Rousseau Murphy's Cat Under Fire is the sequel to Cat on the Edge, which follows the adventures of a talking tomcat, Joe Grey, and his "girlfriend" Dulcie (another talking cat) as they use their unusual abilities to solve crimes in their neighborhood.

Although I have found the two books about Joe Grey and Dulcie entertaining and feel the concept of talking cat-detectives is promising, overall Cat on the Edge and Cat Under Fire are not as rich an experience as Murphy's The Catswold Portal (more on this book in another review). Cat Under Fire has a clever plot and some humorous scenes, such as an argument between Joe Grey and his owner over the cost of Joe's recent "purchases" from the local deli, but in comparison with The Catswold Portal, the characters in Cat Under Fire seem flat and predictable. Hopefully Murphy will be able to correct this problem in future novels about these characters.
