Some general guidelines applicable to just about any email list, message board, or chat:
- DO read and follow any instructions that come with the subscription to the list or signon for the chat or forum. DO keep these so you’ll be able to unsubscribe later. DO keep a printed copy somewhere
handy so that you can unsubscribe after your emailbox fills up or your hard disk crashes.
- DO “Lurk” for a few days or a week to get a sense of the culture of the group before you jump into the discussions. But do stop lurking at that point and join in with the discussion.
- DO NOT use the email list to try to convert folks -- whether away from humanism, or to your own specific style of humanism.
- DO avoid flaming and insults on the list, even if you perceive others to be doing so.
- DO NOT use email addresses from the list for any commercial purposes, spamming, harassment, etc.
- DO contact the list manager for the list if you have questions about what is acceptable behavior on the list, or if you want to unsubscribe or change your options.
- DO contact the webmaster if you’re feeling harassed.
- DO refuse to add to discussions that you feel are off-topic.
- DO unsubscribe from the list before changing your email address or going on extended vacations. It’s especially important to do this if your emailbox has a “vacation reminder” that will send an “I’m not
here” message to the list for every message from the list it receives!
- DO copy just enough of a message to which you’re replying, that others reading your message will get the context of your reply. But don’t include the whole message, especially if it’s long. Not
everyone has access to quick internet download speeds or infinite hard disk storage space.
