1990 Census of Population and Housing
Overview:
Every 10 years the entire population of the United States and it’s territories is counted by the U.S. Census Bureau which is a part of the Department of Commerce. The 1990 Census of Population and Housing is broken down into several sections according to the type of data collected and the geographic area covered. All 1990 Census data is available in both paper and CD-ROM formats.
STF1A:
This data represents 100% data based on the questionnaire used in
the 1990 Census. It includes data on race, gender, marital status, age, Hispanic origin, household type and household relationships. Housing data include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, units in structure, contract rent, meals included in rent, value and number of rooms. Data is arranged by state and is available in a hierarchical sequence down to block groups.
STF3A:
This sample data is presented according to the same hierarchy and includes the same information as the STF1A section and includes all data from the state level to the smallest level available (tracts, block numbering areas or block groups). However, it is based on the Long-Form Questionnaire used in the 1990 Census and therefore contains much more in-depth information including education, place of birth, ancestry, disability, fertility and much more.
SSTF’s:
The Special Summary Tape Files include nationwide data on a variety of different topics including Characteristics of the Black population, Characteristics of American Indians, Ancestry of the Population, Fertility, Geographical Mobility and many other topics of interest.
