Rotary Club of Bintulu Central

Message prepared by President Andrew Wong for RCBC installatoin / Charter ceremony, 4th October, 98.

1998 is a year of many changes and events and a new club "Rotary Club of Bintulu Central" was born on 15th March, 98, under the sponsorship of Rotary Club of Bintulu.

To many, 1998 is a year that is filled with much anxiety and uncertainty : On economic front, we are still puzzled with the sudden plunge, with much negative consequences that seem like the worst nightmare. The repercussion arising from economic turmoil is spreading its wings to many other facets of our life in the society. The weather created its havoc : the dry spell, jungle fires and haze, water shortage .. , the mysterious disease that took away so many young life, the Christmas industrial explosion... which luckily and hopefully, are history to remember. But anxiety and uncertainty linger on.

Against the backdrop of seemingly gloomy sentiments, a group of people, from various races and professional background gather under the roof of Rotary Club of Bintulu Central, trying in a humble way, to chart our Dream "To Serve above Self".

We confess, we do not have solutions to the many problems in the community and the society. But we have a compelling belief : we believe in the intelligence and capacity of humankind to create a better future for everyone. We believe in our Dream with creative energy that constantly attracts our inspiration and effort to Serve. We gathered in May, 98 to chart our Rotary dream in relation to the context and needs of Bintulu community using brainstorming techniques. From there we draw our plan and programs.

Business community, an important fabric of our society network and also the economic engine, is a sector in the community which we hope we could make some contribution from Knowledge perspectives. We hope to facilitate, rekindle and stimulate further their enterprising spirit, their business acumen in this difficult time. We hope to create synergy among various sectors that could revitalise the economic growth engine. In return the business community could more easily help the community at large.

We also wish to focus on the International community in Bintulu, as in this era of global village and borderless world, diversity can give rise to creativity and synergy. We know many non-Malaysian in Bintulu who are most welling to contribute their share to the whole community.

The other avenues of Rotary services, vocation, youth and club, besides community and international, are also parts of our Rotary dreams. We do not mean to be ambitious, but we hope that our large vision and Dream, helps and guides us in every small and humble step / action we undertake.

On this night of our charter and 1st installation, we wish to make known to our community leaders and representatives our Rotary Dream, and we invite your active participation and collaboration to jointly find a creative way to better serve this community, in which we are all a part.
