The Haze Problem
Severe haze problem (Sept. 97) in Sarawak, a state in Malaysia, shades much thoughts on organisations quest for Excellence, Quality and Learning Organisation. (Note: Currently there is no more haze problem)
In brief, the haze problem is man-made (originated from large forest fires in Indonesia, affecting Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, ..) with escalating severity coupled with unusual natural phenomena of prolong drought. It is noted that some scientific theories state the cause of unusual natural phenomena as man-made also arising from other economic activities.
It is futile to discuss the culprits to the source of the large scale tropical forest fires as meaningful learning is seldom drawn by pointing finger. It is noted that various human economic activities are direct contributing factors like numerous small scale shifting cultivation of the local, relying on burning to clear land for farming, large scale industrial or plantation activities, or simply dry weather with easily combustible wood, peat, coal deposit etc. or combination thereof. The consequences are declaration of "state of emergency" in Sarawak dated 19th Sept. 97, with closure of schools, factories, transportation (air and sea) .... There are many direct and indirect consequences (depending on how soon the situation can be put under control) : instant elimination of wild life in the burning forest, ecological upset, health problem to the million, out of orbit routine life, stoppage or distraction of the industrial engines with little or no products output to internal or overseas customers who needs our fuels (oil and gas), woods for their building industries, palm oil etc. One can easily imagine the spinning negative effects from this "haze" problem. It is a manifestation of "borderless society" in reality, whereby the old paradigm does not work anymore: "What you do, is your problem. Or, Mind our own business", but "Your problem is also my problem! We are all closely connected and related."
