HUMAN RESOURCES
"The fact is that the greatest crimes
are caused by excess and not by necessity.
Men do not become tyrants in order that
they may not suffer from the cold;"
Aristotle (Politics)
A tree can be a resource as can oil, coal, water. But people?
I often function in a capacity involving "human resources" in
the course of my job as a manager; I never seem to perceive
those employees as something expendable as other resources.
The term "human resources" has always stuck in my craw.
I guess it's not a gross injustice, to call people resources,
but it does seem to be a bit subliminal. I would dare to say
that it's actually a dehumanizing term, considering how we
perceive resources. They're consumable.
To be a resource doesn't necessarily mean to be used to the
end of exhaustion; but it does mean to be used. But, in musing,
I can recall all sort of folks who want to feel usefull; when
it gets to be too much, their first complaint is usually, "I'm
being used." Well, that's the nature of a resource.
Make sense?
