The following outline is a guide only. Any material from the readings (even if not covered in class) may be included on assignments and exams.

You should be able to accomplish the following tasks and identify the following functions/keys/terms before leaving the lab today:

Chapter 1:

1. What is the main difference between DOS and Windows?
2. What is a GUI?

Chapter 2:

1. Identify and correctly insert a floppy diskette into the floppy (A:) drive
2. Turn on the computer.
3. Correctly use a mouse

• Understand how to click
• Understand how to double-click
• Understand how to click and drag
• Identify the following mouse symbols and what they mean
• Arrow
• Four-pointed arrow
• Two-pointed vertical arrow
• Two-pointed horizontal arrow
• Two-pointed diagonal arrow
• I-beam
• Pointing finger
• Hourglass

4. Use and/or identify the following keyboard keys:

• Function keys
• Numeric keypad
• Cursor control keys
• Shift
• Alt
• Ctrl
• Esc
• Scroll lock
• Delete
• Backspace
• Insert

• Caps lock
• Tab

Chapter 4

1. Identify the cursor
2. Be able to distinguish the desktop from a window
3. Distinguish between a file and a program/application
4. GUI - Graphical User Interface
5. Understand the difference between hardware and software
6. Identify an icon

Chapter 5

1. Launch a program from an icon
2. Identify the pointer (also known as the arrow)
3. Identify a program/application
4. Save a program
5. Use the Save As command and its difference from the Save option
6. Start a program from an icon
7. Use a pull-down menu
8. Run two programs at the same time and switch from one to the other
9. Print a file

1. Identify and/or use the following parts of a window:

3. Understand that cut or copied text or graphics can be transferred from program to program

Chapter 11

1. Understand the program manager window
2. Shrink a program group to an icon and back again
3. Start a program/application

Chapter 12

1. Copying a file in the file manager
2. Deleting a file in the file manager
3. The type/use/names of the drives in the Hodges lab
4. Copying to the floppy disk
5. Naming files
6. File name extensions

Chapter 13

1. Understand the following error messages and how to correct the situation

• Not enough memory
• Cannot Read/Write from drive F:, A:, whatever
• Not ready error reading drive A:
• Insufficient disk space
• Not a valid filename
• There is no disk in drive A:. Insert a disk, and then try again.
• Share violation: File already in use
