A Second Chance

Few people in life are given a second chance at making their lives worth living. It is a one shot deal, you have to take and give all in the short time you are allotted. That may be the reason that many people seem reckless or impulsive about many things. They are sure they will not get another try, so they take the biggest risks with the one chance they get.

There are some however who do get a second chance. A chance to make up for previous mistakes and missed opportunities. These folks are a lucky group of individuals who may get the opportunity to straighten out earlier acts.

Those of us who have taken the steps to a sober recovery are in this group. We have been offered a second chance to view our lives and accomplishments from a different perspective.

How we act with this second chance is the important part. We may take for granted that we have this opportunity, and waste the time we have been given. If we do not make the best of this we are doing a great disservice not only to ourselves, but also to those who are close to us.

We can work at making amends to those we have harmed. This is a slow and sometimes painful experience. But it improves not only our lives but those around us. We can work at improving our own lives, or helping to enrich those around us.

We get a second chance to not only help ourselves, but to provide help for others, weather by example, or emotional support. This extended hand can often give a second chance to someone else, who in turn can pass that on. This sense of shared help can be of great benefit to those who need it.

A side benefit is also the sense of accomplishment this can produce in the person offering their assistance. The snowball effect takes over.

We cannot however become to self congratulatory or complacent. Just because we may have been offered another chance does not mean we will succeed. We must work at it. We must be constantly on guard to be aware of the possibilities of failure or relapse.

A second chance is not something to be squandered. We are lucky to get this opportunity and need to take full advantage of what has been offered to us.
