History
Illegitimate son of a noble, Jarod was left in the care of the Dragoloft family. The Lord Darion Dragonloft had encountered Jarod's mother early in his career as a diplomat. Already married and with 3 children, Darion was smitten with a half-elven emmissary from a tribe of wood elves who were interested in opening trade routes through their forest. Enchanted by the savage beauty and cultured, sing-song voice of Aleana. Darion forgot about his family and spent much of his off negotiative time with her. However, upon returning to Dragonloft castle, Darion realized the depth of his wrong doing and the possible implications of it. He was seriously contemplating setting up an "accident" to befall Aleana a few weeks after their meeting, but she sent word that she was pregneant. Darion, who found it extremely difficult to even think of taking one life would not take two. Regardless of the consequences, and feeling an obligation towards Aleana, Darion sent the best of his personal guard to watch over her. His son was born 7 months later. Urtrek, Darion's man-at-arms and friend, agreed to watch over the boy and see that he was raised properly and educated. Everything was going well until one day, when Aleana was travelling the new trade road to the nearby city of Lusken. Bridangs, who were finally able to bring their trade to the once (when first built) heavily patrolled road, attacked her party. Urtrek and Aleana's kinsmen were able to drive them off, but not before taking losses. Aleana, mortally wounded from a barbed brigand arrow, entrusted 2 year old Jarod into the care of Urtrek, who she'd come to love and respect. Having little place himself among the elves, Urtrek returned with his charge to Dragonloft castle. Darion, who was sorrowed at the death of Aleana, accepted Jarod into his family, "adopting" him as a ward of Dragonloft. Urtrek became his personal protector and teacher. Though it was widely believed at first that Jarod was Urtrek's son, the boy began growing into Dragonloft features, having a straight patrician nose and luxurious black hair with one white forelock (which was covered up with die for a while and later explained as an accident with magic, as it was a periodic Dragonloft trait). Jarod was smaller than his syblings, being slight of build (where the other 2 Dragonloft boys were quite tall and broad shouldered), quite lean with muscles which, though not prominent, were rock hard. His remarkably green eyes (from his mother) were smoky and marbled in appearance. Graceful and intelligent, Jarod spent much time out of doors, and was often seen climbing along the cliffs of the seaside manor. He felt very much at home in the forest, and often spent days there. Despite his natural grace and stamina, Jarod was not well suited to the skills of a fighter. Urtrek found that the boy spent too much time analyzing his opponents and contemplating future moves than attacking. Noticing the boy's agile mind and the joy he took in gathering knowledge, Urtrek decided he could better apply himself on an intellectual level. Thus began the boy's training as a mage. Having very few friends (there was always much suspicion surrounding his origins, so the children of the castle took to teasing him). Jarod pursued his studies wholeheartedly. He was always competing with his brother and sister (twins, Erol and Dierdre), the firsborn of Dragonloft, for the attentions of his father. Erol, a Chismatic and well-liked knight and Dierdre, a noble warrior-priestess of Helm (before the Time of Troubles), were Darion's favorites, and he doted on them. Josua, the second-born, was perhaps the closest of the three to Jarod, and they would often spend time hunting together, discussing things form the cosmos to females. Jarod was always looking for ways to impress his father and, though he didn't hate Erol or Dierdre, he resented them for the ease that they took the precious quantity of Darion's attention. Always pushing himself to higher levels, Jarod was never afraid to attempt forbidden or dangerous experiments. Though his attitude was greatly moderated by the gentle Urtrek or lawful Josua, Jarod was very much a free spirit. Just before the Time of Troubles, he attempted a very dangerous ritual that was nearly beyond his ability and was very close to death (he learned and attempted to cast a 5th level spell when at 5th level, see Player's Option: Spells and Magic on chaneller mages and exceeding spell level maximums). Drained and very weak, Jarod had a spiritual awakening. Then the Time of Troubles struck. In the chaos that followed, Darion was killed and Erol took over Dragonloft castle. The prejudice of the Northern people against Helm drove Dierdre south after this terrible period was over. Urtrek was blinded and lost a leg in a battle with mutated treants from the nearby forest (he now has a wooden prosthesis). Josua, whose young interest in the forest eventually blossomed into love, left the estate to follow Meilliki (as a ranger). Jarod, who now believed in a balance in the universe, ammended his chaotic ways (changed alignment to neutral good, this and the chaos in magic caused him to instantly lose two mage levels). With Darion gone and Urtrek incapacitated (he never fully recovered for several years), Jarod decided to leave Dragonloft castle and seek his fortune (not knowing he was ever in line for inheriting; Urtrek is the last person alive who knows the truth of his parentage). On his travels, he discovered in himself the vast mental abilities the Time of Troubles awoke. Travelling west and south, Jarod fell in with a troupe of travelling performers. Untrained psionically, he used what remained of his once considerable mage skills to weave skilful illusions. During one of the troupe's performance an old woman named Vorshaeva, a member of an underground order of psionicists, was gently scanning over the minds of those in the crowd (an old habit she picked up, as she used to be a theif with wild talent) when she chanced upon the shining mind of untrained Jarod. Seeing the vast potential in the young man, Vorshaeva and her young apprentice, Amberlee, followed the troupe, watching Jarod to see if he was worthy of the attention of the order. Impressed with the conviction and dedication with which the young man pursued his goals (a conviction that had stamped a permanent grimness and singleness of purpose about him), Vorshaeva decided to reveal herself. First approaching him through Amberlee, who was enamored of Jarod, Vorshaeva began Jarod's psionic training. He initially found in himself a great propensity for manipulating his body (a trait which had at times shown itself in the Dragonloft family, primarily in the direct descendents of its founder, Halsindel of the Vale, who had used similar abilities in ridding the cliffs of Dragonloft of the presence of the evil deep dragon Peridantecles several hundred years ago).
