| History | |||||
| Ivar is the son of a now deceased sellsword named Svardyn. Early on in his life Ivar had hoped to become a man at arms like his father, who had been teaching him the rudiments of combat since he was old enough to weild a dagger. His favorite weapon consequentially was the dagger, which was easily concealed and could be used both thrown and at hand. Before any serious studies could commence, Ivar was afflicted with a wasting disease at around the age of 10, and never fully recovered the heartiness that his clan was known to possess. His father died in a bar brawl when Ivar turned 13, so the lad was forced to get a job to support his family. His mother, Elayne, was a poor blind woman that Svardyn had fallen in love with when she helped tend his wounds in a Waterdeep hospital (Waterdeep is his home town). His 2 sisters had been pampered by their father and had few skills but their beauty, which Elayne would not allow them to turn to prostitution. Ivar, who always got along with animals well, was hired as a stable boy after calming the horse of a minor noble, Limn Kaldor, who was passing through the street where he was begging. Enjoying the job, Ivar worked on the Kaldor estate for little over a year. One day, he was asked to help carry some books to the Kaldor library, where he was stunned by the amount of knowledge in the one small room. He stole a small book for himself and determined that he would learn how to read. The book he took was the journal of an apprentice mage, a distant relative of the Kaldors who had been killed while drunkenly attempting to charm the guard panthers of the house wherein a lady of whom he was enamored dwelt. With the help of a kindly old stable master, Ivar learned how to read and picked up a grasp of spellcasting and magic (of which the lazy apprentice often griped about and made huge entries of his minor successes in the journal). The old man, who was slightly senile, thought that it was just a story. Late in his 14th year, his eldest sister Tiah came to fetch him from his work because his ailing mother was growing sicker. At just that moment, Limn Kaldor was leaving for a ride on his charger. Upon seeing the ravishing beauty he fell instantly in love and commenced wooing her. Overwhelmed, Tiah could not refuse his advances and agreed to marry him. The entire family was transferred to the Kaldor estate, where Elayne was tended to. Ivar, who no longer had to work in the stables, began going to the library and reading more on the interesting subject of magic. Noting the time he spent there, Jonlimn Kaldor (patron) decided that Ivar could earn his keep around the estate, so he was given the duties of a scribe: he was to copy old and fraying books to newer ones which would be rebound and placed in the library. Ivar was delighted at this and proved to be very good at it. During this time he perused much lore, learning things about the lands, monsters and the past. In his spare time he continued his studies of magic and began to grow proficient. At 16 Ivar's mother died of the same wasting illness that had afflicted him as a child. Depressed, Ivar began to feel rebellious and became disgusted of the false fronts and farce of the courtiers the Kaldors associated with. He left the estate, and disowned the family (but took some gold to get by for the next few weeks). He went and became a freelance scribe of considerable skill who was often hired by dignitaries to make copies of trade contracts or other such documents. During this time, and through constant association with both elven and dwarven traders, Ivar learned to speak, read and write the languages of these races. Scrivening, for all his skill, did not pay well. Ivar would often used his natural dexterity and minor knowledge of magic to put on street shows, combining cantrips with prestidigitation to impress the passers-by on the streets. One day, a thief who, on passing through these parts had stolen the spellbook of a low level magic user, decided that he could easily double his profit on selling the book if he were to get a copy made for himself (which then he could get copied again etc) Hearing of the prowess of Ivar, the thief decided that he would get the scribe to make a copy of the book. Since the thief was not evil (he was chaotic neutral), and knowing of the interest Ivar had in magic, he decided that the commission he would pay would be the spells. After completing this job, Ivar's wanderlust finally overwhelmed him: he wanted to see the places and creatures that he had read about himself. He decided he would leave the stifling city and commenced adventuring at 17. | |||||
