John Franklin was born in the Parish of Ruardean in Gloucestershire, England. In England, he was a blacksmith, and came to the U.S. in 1812 to pursue his trade. He married Catharine Longsdorf from Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County, PA. In all, they had 11 children, 9 boys, 3 girls. In the mid 1800's, they relocated to rural Roxbury in Franklin County, PA
