Chapter Twelve

A week had passed. Liza had been quickly picked up by the Corp. Too quickly, thought Sheridan.
They must have been waiting for her in he wings. He hadn't had much choice but to let them take her. He couldn't exactly appeal to EarthGov at the moment. Besides, Franklin had deemed her clinically insane before they got her. She wasn't going to be much good to the Corp anymore anyway. Seems Jessie had shorted out any fuses Liza may have had left in her already unstable condition. And callous as it may seem, nobody was losing any sleep over it.
Zack had kept to himself since the day Jessie and her father had been killed. Sheridan kindly offered him a day or two off, but he felt he'd rather keep busy, and declined it.
At first, he thought he saw her everywhere, and it made his chest hurt. He wondered how a woman he only knew for two days could have had this much effect on him. He hated it at the same time he desperately clung to her image. She'd been young..only 20.... His heart asked the age old question of why this had to happen to her, why so young, and why just when he had found her.
Her belongings had been brought to the stationhouse, and thus to him. There was no one to send them to. She had no other family. He knew he should get rid of them, but he found himself taking her small bag and putting it on a closet shelf in his quarters telling himself he'd take care of it later. He did however, give her mother's jewelry to Lyta, who had tried not to cry when he presented her with them. He thought Jessie might have liked her to have them. He kept the Centauri "barrette" she had worn on their date for himself.

He'd known it wasn't a barrette at the time. Londo wore a similiar brooch on his coat from time to time. He assumed the merchant had told her it was a barrette just to make a sale, but she looked so pretty, he hadn't had the heart to tell her at the time. Sighing, and yet finding himself smiling at her memory for the first time, he pinned it on the inside of his jacket. Close to his heart.
