The Rakon

Description:  The rakon are silicon-based lifeforms.  They are egg-shaped and trilateral in appearance.  They possess three pseudopod-like arms, each ending in three digits, positioned equally around the equator of their form, as well as three stumpy legs, equally positioned around their lower region.  Their three eyes are pitch black and evenly spaced around the upper half of their body (although they can't see out of more than two at one time).  The rakon eat and talk through their mouth, located at the top of their body.  They are dense creatures, weighing roughly 150 kilograms, and standing only 1.5 meters tall.  Their outer carapace ranges in colour from grey to dull brown, both looking and feeling like rock (although it isn't as solid).  The rakon are tri-sexual.  The species contains males, females, and neutrals.  The sexes were classified this way by League xenobiologists, as the rakon see no distinction between themselves other than reproductive methods.  Males carry multiple gene-carrier cells, females carry singular eggs, and neutrals actually serve as the womb for which the baby rakon is born into (I won't go any farther into rakon mating).

History:  It is unknown how the rakon evolved the way they did, and on the world that they inhabit, considering that aside from several varieties of simply self-replicating crystal (which is the rakon's food source) there are no other species of life on Qua'bal, the rakon homeworld.  Many League scientists believe they are a created race.

Rakon history isn't marred by violence and bloodshed due to their special psychological and biological make-up (see below).  Rather, the rakon have busied themselves building and creating great marvels on their homeworld.  Giant cities dot the barren landscape, appearing alien to humans and other League members.  The rakon have only begun to explore space in the past century.  They have not, however, felt the need to colonize other worlds.  They have however sent out numerous unmanned warp-capable probes, carrying messages of friendship and love, in hopes of contacting another sentient race.

Culture and Psychology:  The rakon promote cooperation, respect, and love among all other things.  They are built this way it seems.  All rakon secrete a special enzyme/pherimone which all other rakon can detect.  This chemical stimulates a portion of the rakon's brain, making that rakon effectively "fall-in-brotherly-love" with any other rakon it sees, thus making rakon vs rakon assaults very rare.  This is the center of the rakons' peaceful society.  Also, although not telepathic, the rakon possess an uncanny ability to be able to predict each other's moves and anticipate each other's actions and requests.  For instance, a ship on its maiden voyage crewed by rakon, even though the rakon onboard have never met each other before the voyage, can anticipate each other's moves and cooperate for maxium efficiency.

Rakon society is broken into three castes: worker, scientific, and religious.  Each caste is equal to the others in all respects.  The rakon enjoy art, architecture, mathematics, and food, and worship a deity they refer to as "the Tri-Fold One".

The rakon get a -1 step bonus when using any Creativity skill.  This also includes Computer Sciences-Hacking, Medical Science-Surgery, or Technical Science-Juryrig.

Free Broad Skills
Constitution-Stamina
Intellegence-Knowledge
Intellegence-Physical Science
Willpower-Creativity
Personality-Culture
Personality-Interaction

Rakon are frequently tech ops, as their innate creativity aids them in this area.  A fair number are also diplomats (many of these are from the religious caste).  Free agent rakon are hard to find, and combat specs are non-existant.  Rakon physiology doesn't allow for mindwalkers.

The rakon are taken from the adventure Convergence, in issue 68 of dungeon magazine, and modified here slightly from their author's (Christopher Perkins) original work.
