Description: The aleerin, now called the mechalus, are almost identical to humans in body shape. The similarity ends there however. Their skin and hair are organic metals. Biologically, they are by far the most alien race ever encountered by the League. They are organic and mechanical at the same time, but they are not really cyborgs. Rather than having bulky hunks of mechanical components surgically installed into their systems, the mechalus are born with thousands upon thousands of nano-probes already within their systems. These probes convert ingested materials into their basic components. From there, components that aid the mechalus' organic areas are sent to their respective areas, while most non-organic material is reshaped by the nano-probes into the mechalus' organic-metalic skin and hair.
History: Even the mechalus don't understand how they came to be the way they are. They are the only species on their home world to have nano-probes, and the complexity of the system is such that it couldn't have evolved naturally. Mechalus creation myths tell of the first civilization of mechalus being wiped out by a horrible pestilence brought on by angry gods. When almost all of the mechalus had died, the gods took pity on the last few, and changed them. League xenologists believe this to be an account of an alien visit to Aleer, and that perhaps these aliens might have changed the mechalus.
Much like human history, mechalus history is plagued by horrible wars. Much of the suffering was brought on by the religion the majority of mechalus followed, which tolerated, and sometimes even encouraged violence to settle various debates. The dominant religion for almost nine hundred years, this brutal faith was finally abolished roughly one hundred and thirty years ago. The masses had become weary of the constant fighting amongst each other, and there was unrest. As the mechalus explored their own solar system, they found another sentient species, still in the stone age. The church of the mechalus tried to make contact with, and convert the primitive race. The savages attacked out of fear, killing many of the clergy sent to their world. In retaliation, the church bombarded the planet from orbit, killing the savages and rendering the planet nearly uninhabitable. When the common folk found out, the revolution began. Violence was one thing, but genocide was something totally different. After a long conflict the church was dethroned and the people began to pick up the pieces.
The mechalus of today wish to put their violent natures behind them and try for a mutually beneficial peace. They have joined the League partially for protection, and partially for enlightenment.
Psychology and Culture: The mechalus are,
by nature, an aggressive species. Since their race commited genocide, however,
the mechalus try their best to downplay their aggressive tendencies and
concentrate on more positive emotions. Mechalus families are small, consisting
of a mother and father, and at most three children, but usually only one.
Infant mechalus mature to full adulthood in roughly twelve years. Most
mechalus recreation takes place via computer games. Although to most races
this may seem unhealthy, the mechalus' nano-probes and bio-computer networks
can provide muscular stimulation from such games (i.e. running in a game
is just as good as running outside is to humans). Many mechalus still enjoy
more primitive games however.
