Not wanting to disappoint BNFX (and more importantly, wanting to get paid) Morgan contacts Karen Solomon and explains why they have gone off mission and that they are heading out immediately to finish surveying the last two systems, to which Karen is very understanding and accepting. Morgan also tries to make a date with Karen, to which she is rather unaccepting.
The heroes get back out into the buffer and begin surveying yet again. System 3367-C holds no planets at all, just an asteroid belt devoid of anything useful. They go to system 3367-D, which seems to be about the same as the other systems they've surveyed (that is to say, useless). That is until Atrus detects a faint power-source on one of the planets. The ship is taken into low orbit where it appears that a ship has crashed, burying itself into the surface of the planet. The group lands and investigates. The planet is a barren rock with no atmosphere, so e-suits are worn. Also, Atrus is taken along in his memory harness, worn by Whooshra. The group then heads into the ship.
It is definately of alien design. As they enter the rear of the vessel, they soon come across the source of the energy readings; a very old, very unstable matter-antimatter reactor. Tip-toeing around it, the heroes descend deeper into the ship, discovering what must've been the crew quarters, as well as several decompressed aliens. Whooshra takes tissue samples and Dalek searches for items of interest, finding a few possibly intact tools. Moving deeper into the ship, the party finally squeezes through many collasped bulkheads into the bridge area, where they find many damaged computers, as well as several more aliens. Dalek finds what appears to be a small, relatively intact computer-like thing, and takes it with him. The group can't go any farther, as the vessel is too badly smashed, and decides to leave.
As they are just about to exit the ship, they see a ragged group of men in worn e-suits, all armed, one of which is pointing a laser cannon at the anti-matter reactor. They men are obviously low-class pirates. The leader thanks the heroes for using their advanced sensors to lead them to the wreck, then demands the PCs surrender the wreck to them for salvaging purposes, and also wants the heroes' ship. They say if they don't surrender, they will shoot the anti-matter reactor, killing everyone (including themselves). Although they seem serious, Whooshra is able to mind read the leader, and finds that he is quite a coward and is bluffing. He relays this info to Morgan who then tells the pirates that they can have the wreck, but not the Phoenix. Morgan hammers the point across that if they take the Phoenix, the party will be stranded and die anyways so they have nothing to lose if the pirates shoot the reactor. The pirates discuss this among themselves and (after Morgan makes a bluff check) decide to let the PCs go.
The PCs make it back to their ship and take off. They scan the planet and find the pirates' vessel several kilometers away; it's an old piece of junk. The party proceeds to target and fire on the grounded ship, knocking the hell out of the command compartment, and subsequently stranding the pirates on the planet (at least temporarily :).
The party heads back to League space where they land on Nibelheim III and contact Mrs. Solomon. She pays them in full (they don't tell her of the alien stuff). Dalek tried to link with the alien computer thing but failed so the party decided to find a tekkie that could build an adapter for it to make it compatible with League computers. Morgan wanted to do this quietly so that if the thing was valuable, he could find a buyer on the black market. He easily made contact with a shady character who new of just such a tekkie. 6000 credits later, the tekkie began working on the device in his workshop, Morgan monitoring him at all times. Unfortunately, Morgan was also being monitored.....
Five days after the tekkie started to work on the device, League soldiers raided the place. The leader of the soldiers informed Morgan that he had gone against the contract he had agreed to when he joined the League's "silent service". The contract clearly stated that all alien artifacts be turned over to League authorities, to protect interstellar security. (At this point, Steve, who plays Whooshra, was busting a gut laughing). The whole party was kept under close watch (lightly incarcerated) in a secure location for several days, each day meeting with lawyers. Things looked grim as each member was looking at 2-5 years in prison (probably more for Morgan). However, news had just reached the League of how the heroes had helped Ambassador Weglal when his ship was taken by Puritans. The Ambassador was notified that his heroes were currently incarcerated and managed to pull a few strings, getting the heroes off the hook (there goes the favor he owed them :).
Several days later, League security invited the PCs (except Morgan) to see the progress they had made on the artifact. It appeared that it was a type of video log. As the group watched, they saw that the ship had been crewed by a race called the Gorene. The gorene had discovered the League nearly 250 years ago via long range probes, and were en route to enlist their aid in fighting another race called the Kybus. However, the kybus tracked them down and blew them out of the stars before they could make it to the League. The PCs leave soon after, wondering what's next..... Morgan decides to advertise the group's services on the grid.
