It started out as the heroes were waiting for their ship to be repaired. Goresh and Morgan arrived after Goresh sorted out Morgan's legal difficulties. Soon after the reunion, the group was approached by Karen Solomon, an employee of BNFX (Brave New Frontiers Explorations). She wanted the heroes to survey systems 3367 A-D, 4 systems in the Buffer region of space, for any worlds that may be habitable, mineral rich, or in any way interesting. She offered a payment of 2000 credits now, 8000 upon completion, but after a bit of talking, she was charmed by Morgan into 3000 now, 10,000 later. The group gladly accepted. After waiting a couple more days (and doing a bit of shopping), their ship was repaired and they were off.
Both systems 3367-A and B didn't prove interesting. As the heroes flew to 3367-C, they picked up a signal in an alien language. Atrus identified the language as kar'soran and translated it. It was a distress call. The heroes quickly followed the call back to a damaged kar'soran merchant freighter. It looked like several nuclear devices were used to attack the ship. Also, debris from two smaller kar'soran ships was found in the area. As the heroes' ship approached the freighter, Atrus found two old boarding pods attached to it. Also, long range scans showed that two ships were on an intercept course, ETA 8 hours. The heroes docked at an airlock and entered the ship.
Once inside, they PCs found a couple of dead kar'soran. Whooshra heard footsteps down a nearby corridor. Morgan snuck up to a corner and checked out who was on board the ship: humans. They appeared to be patroling the vessel. The PCs followed at a distance, finally ducking into the ship's med bay. Goresh hooked into the medical computer and tried to enter the main networks of the ship. He succeeded and brought up schematics of the vessel (they now were allowed to see the map). He also brought up a cargo manifest, in which he found a classified section which he couldn't hack into. Waiting for the guards to pass by, the group headed over to the captain's quarters. Inside, they found the captain's personal computer, where Goresh accessed his log. In the final entry, it appeared that the kar'soran vessel had picked up a distress call using League transponder codes and was going to investigate it. From this, the crew deduced that the vessel wasn't just randomly attacked, it was ambushed. They went to the VIP quarters, in which they found a dead kar'soran. Just as they were going to leave, Whooshra heard something move in the closet. They got their weapons ready and opened the door, only to find a living kar'soran inside. After getting his translator from his desk, the kar'soran thanked the heroes for rescuing him. At this point, the kar'soran reveals that he is the classified cargo the ship was carrying; he's an ambassador to the League from the KME (Ambassador Weglal). He also told the PCs that the men who attacked are Puritans; genocidal humans. Morgan wanted to take this guy to the ship and get the hell out of there, especially after hearing about the Puritans' elite warriors, the Exterminators. However, the ambassador offered a reward to the PCs if they would find and free any living crew of his ship; he didn't want to leave the crew to die. The group agreed to help, but first got the ambassador back to his ship.
The PCs set up an attack plan and ambushed the two guards on patrol. The group hid in various rooms on the patrol route. As the guards walked by, Morgan jumped out nailing one in the back with a mass pistol (and dropping him quite solidly) while Whooshra shot the other with a crossbow he recently purchased (although not doing as much damage as he wanted). The guard turned and open fire on the group until Goresh nailed him with his laser pistol. The guard then ran with Morgan hot on his heels. As the guard was about to run into the C&C room, Morgan shot him with his mass pistol, dropping him. Whooshra used clairvoyance to look into the C&C area where he saw two more soldiers, and what could only be an Exterminator; a massive human with a cybernetic exoskeleton and a large rifle. They (wisely) decided to avoid a direct confrontation with this group right now and proceeded to hide the bodies of the two dead guards.
They then headed towards the cargo area of the ship. The doors to the cargo section had large windows, through which two guards could be seen. Morgan, feeling bold, decided to simply step through and shoot one, while Whooshra and Goresh concentrated on the other. Luckily, they suprised the guards and were able to drop them very fast (like, within two phases). Morgan headed over to the security office and proceeded to open the weapons locker. He also noticed security monitors that were looking at each of the four cargo bays on the ship. In one, he noticed about a dozen kar'soran prisoners with two guards watching over them. Two others were empty, but the third contained three normal soldiers and another Exterminator, armed with a rail gun! He called Goresh over who had an idea. Goresh linked up with the security computer and commanded the cargo bay doors to seal so the soldiers and the Exterminator couldn't get out, and the cargo bay airlocks to open, sending the four Puritans out into space.
The group then headed down to the prison cargo bay, and a brief gun fight ensued in which, once again, Morgan demonstrated the usefulness of a mass pistol for indoor close range combat, and the group was able to overwhelm the guards very quickly. They freed the prisoners and headed back to their ship with all the surviving kar'soran in tow. As the exited the cargo area of the ship, they ran into one of the soldiers and the Exterminator from the bridge. The Puritans open fire with the group retreating back into the cargo area, closing and locking the doors. Expecting the Puritans to blast through the door, they armed the kar'soran with the weapons from the security office, positioned themselves for an attack and waited.
Here's where I got nasty. I felt that they had gone through this whole adventure and barely taken a scratch, and with all of these armed kar'soran waiting in ambush, the remaining Puritans didn't have a chance. Wanting them to sweat a little, the Puritans did not attack. Instead, all doors from the cargo bay airlocks to the cargo area the PCs and kar'soran were currently in opened. A second later, the sirens began wailing as the airlocks were about to open. The entire group swore and Goresh ran into the security office and linked with the computer, trying to override the command. I let him try by making a computer operations check (at a +5 penalty!) and the bugger makes it, barely. The airlock doors fail to open but the Puritans still don't attack. Soon, Whoosra opens the doors to see if the Puritans are still out there. He peaks his head out only to almost have it blown off by the two Puritans waiting in ambush there. As Whooshra ducks back into the room, Morgan jumps out and fires his beloved mass pistol, missing. Whooshra reloads and fires again, nailing the soldier, and dropping him (mortal damage) but is himself hit by the Exterminator for some wound damage. Morgan fires some more, missing, but luck was with him as the Exterminator's gun jammed (rolled a natural 20). Before he could unjam his weapon, Morgan and Goresh managed to knock him out with accumulated stun damage, after which Morgan iced him.
They then made it back to their ship where they were ready to take off. Also, at this point James, who plays Goresh, had to go. Rhys, who plays Dalek, just got off work and arrived moments after James left, so there were still three people in the party.
As the group was getting ready to leave, Ambassador Weglal explained that some of the technical team survived and could repair the ship if allowed to. There was, after all, only one surviving Puritan on board. After Morgan asked for a bit more money, and got it, Dalek gleefully went to the C&C area and found the last Puritan, where he smote him into the afterlife with his gravmace (taking some damage himself in the process, but Dalek isn't big on tactics). By this time, there was only about 5 hours before the other ships would arrive. The crews went to work. Three hours passed, and virtually all systems but engines and warp were online. Another hour and they had partial mobility and warp. They were about to make a run for it when Atrus reported that the two incoming vessels were old style boarding ships; lightly armed and armored troop and personel carriers. They group decided to stay and fight. As the two ships dropped out of warp, both the kar'soran vessel and the heroes' vessel, the Phoenix, proceeded to blow them out of the stars.
It took two weeks, as the kar'soran warp drives are much slower than League drives, but the PCs escorted the freighter from its current position to League space. Ambassador Weglal wouldn't soon forget this heroic feat the party had performed and promised to do them a favor in the future.
