Sabotage on the Front Lines

Mike and Rhys were absent from this adventure, so Morgan and Dalek were left out.

The heroes head back into League territory to repair their ship from their fight with the AI assassin.  They dock in the Vela system and await repairs to be completed.  During their stay, they are contacted by a member of League Intellegence who wishes them to go to the Anduin system and retrieve an operative.  She explains that the Anduin system is a border world and is a likely target for a kybus attack.  Its defenses are impressive, but the League wants the operative out of there, as he has valuable information regarding several kybus warships (he got them from a few underhanded kar'soran traders).  The group agrees to go get Kamasham (the seshayan agent) and leave the next day, as the repairs to their ship are completed ahead of schedule.

Kurknoon is still upset about the AI assassin being alive and on the loose, so again, everyone steers clear of him while in warp.  At the end of their journey, they arrive at the Anduin system, their destination being Anduin IV.  Almost immediately when they come out of warp, sirens go off.  Atrus notifies them that a fleet of 19 kybus ships of various size are heading towards them.  The quickly race to the planet and luckily make it into its defense matrix before the kybus get into weapons range.  The kybus ships turn around and do not engage the orbital defense platforms.

The heroes land at the only major city on this agricultural planet and are greeted by several members of the planet's military, who escort them to the planetary garrison.  There they meet Commisar Straff.  Straff knows about their mission and begins leading them to where Kamasham is staying.  All of a sudden, air raid sirens begin to go off all over the base.  Straff tells the heroes that the kybus must be attempting to run the defense grid.  Everyone heads into the C&C of the base, where the automated orbital platforms are run from.  The kybus have received several reinforcement ships and are approaching on an attack vector.  The orbitals target the lead kybus ships and prepare to fire their massive plasma guns.

All of a sudden, all of the orbital plasma guns go offline!  Only the missle launchers can be fired, and they must be shot manually using the controls in C&C rather than using their auto-targeting systems!  Kurknoon and Ezekiel quickly man the controls of two missle racks, as well as several soldiers manning a few others.  Goresh links with the central military computer to find out what's wrong (after getting permission to do so from Straff).  The ships get into missle range and the PCs start to shoot them up.  Several rounds of intense missle fire goes on.  Meanwhile, Goresh makes no progress on getting the plasma cannons online, so he calls Atrus on his comm gear and tells him to link with the military computer (Straff gives Atrus the password, as he knows that Atrus is a League certified AI).  After several more rounds of fire, Atrus is at least able to get the auto-targeting system for the missle launchers back online (with help from Goresh) but fails to get the plasma sats going; they seem to be continuously running some kind of diagnostic program, which makes it very difficult for even Atrus to interface with them.  Several kybus vessels launch matter bombs from orbit, intent on destroying the colony.  Out of 6 bombs, the heroes and soldiers manage to shoot 5 down.  One, however, makes it through the defense grid and flies down several miles away from the colony.  Even though it lands far away, the resulting blast levels about one tenth of the entire colony, as well as miles upon miles of farmland.  Power temporarily shuts down in C&C, only to be back on a second later by backup generators.  However, that little distraction is all the kybus need to get four dropships past the majority of the defense network.  One is blown away by a lucky shot made by Ezekiel, landing a missle square on the vessel's engines, and sending it streaking to the ground many miles away.  The other three land safely about two miles from the colony's edge.  At this point, Goresh is able to get the plasma cannons up and running (with help from Atrus).  With this development, Straff tells the heroes to help defend the city as best they can for the time being; he'll let them know when its safe to leave the planet.

A long drawn out fight ensues as the kybus troops charge across the plains towards the defenders of the town.  Mortars and grenade launchers fire outward, blowing many kybus into little bits.  The kybus get their licks in too, as their ranged weapons slice into the defenders.  Kurknoon gets the bright idea to head out towards the dropships and kill the commander(s) coordinating the invasion, so he and several of the colony's soldiers zip off towards the dropships in a hover jeep (around the mass of kybus charging, that is).  The rest of the party (who Kurknoon tried to talk into going with him) decided to do what they could at the front lines, then run back to C&C, get Kamasham, and get offworld.  As Kurknoon is charging towards the landed dropships, one of them takes off and begins slowly flying towards the colony.  Ezekiel and Goresh can see this from where they are and assume the kybus mean to bring the ship's weapons to bear on the colony.  However, it soon becomes obvious that the kybus intend to self-destruct the ship over the colony, as a massive power surge is detected coming from the ship's core.  Virtually every long range, powerful weapon in the colony (including Kurknoon's plasma cannon) are aimed at the ship, and eventually bring it down well outside the colony (luckily the ship didn't blow up).

While all this happened, Goresh and Ezekiel got back to C&C and got word that League reinforcements had arrived and were beginning to clear the system of remaining kybus vessels.  Happy to hear this, they got Kamasham and went back to their ship (soon, they were joined by Kurknoon).  As League dropships began landing reserve troops, the PCs were given the OK to exit the system.

The group made their rendezvous with a League intellegence vessel and dropped Kamasham off, but while in transit they do a bit of investigating into the mysterious computer bug that shut the defense grid down.  Goresh and Atrus were able to determine that the bug was almost certainly intentionally placed.  When they tried finding out who was in charge of the military software on Anduin IV, they found that the lead coordinator of Instar (makers of the software that planted the bug) had left the system a week prior to attack because of a family emergency in the Odin system.  The group contacted Admiral Danov with this realization.  Once shown the proof (a copy of the bug), Danov thanked the group and told them that League authorities would handle it from here, but also told them that if they wanted to go to the Odin system and find the coordinator, he would delay the authorities until after the heroes questioned him.

The group headed to Odin where Kurknoon and Goresh found and confronted Micheal Smitts (the Instar coordinator) who basically freaked (mostly from the sight of an angry weren shouting at him).  He told the heroes that his superiors had wanted him to plant the bug for some reason, but told them he was only following orders.  The authorities soon arrived and took Mr. Smitts into custody.

As the heroes were getting ready to leave the planet, an old friend found them and invited them back to his place.  Brett Maddox made a return into the campaign....
