02 ABOUT THIS AIRCRAFT
---------------------------
Following a long tradition of staying neutral, but well armed, between the
East and the West, Sweden designed its third generation of supersonic
fighters again within its own resources. Saab had already the experience
from the design of Gripens predecessors, the models 35 Draken and 37 Viggen.

The Saab JAS-39 Gripen is the first of the new generation european jet
fighters that entered regular service. The two contemporary designs are
the french Dassault Rafale and the multi-national Eurofighter EF-2000.
All three are similar in basic layout, delta wings plus canard surfaces.
They share also the concept of being dynamically unstable aircraft which
rely fully on their sophisticated electronic flight management systems.

While they are all three almost in the same class, the Gripen is the lightest
of the three designs and has only one engine, while the two others have two
engines. The Gripen is a true multi-role aircraft, capable of doing inter-
ceptor, attack and reconnaissance missions.

Seven single-seat prototypes of the Gripen were built and their production
version JAS-39A entered service with the Swedish Air Forces F7 squadron in
1996. The first dual-seat JAS-39B made its first flight in April 1996 and
will enter service in 1999. A total of 140 Gripens is firmly ordered for the
Swedish Air Force, maybe followed by another batch of 70. Saab and its
partner British Aerospace are also marketing the type to international
customers.

This model depicts the colourful markings of the no. 4 Gripen prototype which
was the first one with a production standard cockpit and also the first to
fly supersonic. The aircraft is fitted with the long sensor-fitted probe at
the nose radome which is typical for prototype aircraft.

The flight dynamics of this model are based on Lars Kornstaedts F-16A model
(e.g. FFALCON.ZIP) and on Daniel Mraweks F-5E model (e.g. F5E097.ZIP). Thus,
only part of the data represent actual Gripen data.
