WARNING: This story shows how much I love Broadway musicals. Especially
Broadway musicals from the early 1940's (the being of Tap Dancing's
popularity). If you don't enjoy Broadway - you're an uncultured swine!
=) Yet, if you do, you wonderful theatre buffs you, enjoy the theatre
vocabulary, and many theatre references (both Trek wise, and reality
wise) in here.

DISCLAIMER: Paramount (unfortunately) chooses not to but the perfect
couple together. But they/it have/has the right to that choice because
(also unfortunately) they/it own/owns these characters. I wrote this
story purely for my pleasure and the pleasure of others. I mean, I have
to! Paramount won't...

Happy Anniversary
by Sue Kisenwether
c July 1998

Waking from her sleepy haze, Beverly Picard felt two warm arms encircle
her ever-expanding waist. She sighed and completely relaxed against her
husband's chest. It was mornings like those when there were only two
people in the universe. But, in a few months, there would be three
people sharing those perfect moments. As she closed her eyes, his soft
kisses began to caress her neck. A few minutes later, his caress stopped
and she heard, "Happy anniversary, my love," whispered into her ear.

She smiled, and softly replied, "Oh, how I love you, Jean-Luc." She
snuggled closer to him, and then asked, "Must we go to work today,
love?"

Catching her off guard, he quickly replied. "No," he said.

She turned in his embrace to look him in the eye and asked, "What do you
mean 'no'?"

Jean-Luc chuckled and hugged her closer. "Beverly, do you actually
believe that I wouldn't have cleared our calendars for our *first*
anniversary?"

Beverly smiled and kissed him. "You *are* amazing, Jean-Luc Picard."

"So are you, Beverly Picard."

"So, my love, since you were *so* thoughtful and *did* happen to clear
our calendars, just what do you suggest that we do with ourselves
today?"

Jean-Luc smiled and said, "Don't you worry about that, Beverly. I have
it all taken care of..."

Jean-Luc walked out of the bathroom to see his very pregnant wife laying
on their bed with a hardbound book in one hand, and a spoon full of...
*something* in the other. The strange food was becoming a permanent
attachment to Beverly hand these past few weeks. But whenever he brought
it up, she just reminded him that pregnant women cannot control their
strange appetites.

Jean-Luc walked around to his side of the bed and began to dry off from
his shower. His curiosity forced him to ask, "What are you reading,
love?"

Beverly swallowed a mouthful of that goop she was eating, and answered,
"_Lord Of The Rings_."

"Who?"

She sighed. "It's the complete _Lord Of The Rings_ series by J.R.R.
Toilken. It may not be Shakespeare, but *I* like it. Besides, it's a
miracle that I was able to find a hardbound copy."

He leaned closer to his wife to get a closer look at the book she was
reading, when his left hand landed in the goop that she was eating. He
groaned.

"Jean-Luc!" Beverly sighed. "Now what did you have to go and do that
for?"

"Beverly! What *is* this stuff?"

"Well, it's, uh," she hesitated. "It's three boxes of Sparking Wildberry
Jell-O (R) and a quart of Cheez Whiz."

He looked at her with his eyes wide, "And just what in the universe is
Cheez Whiz?"

She laughed. "I'm not to sure that you really want to know the answer to
that, Jeany."

Jean-Luc just shook his head and sighed. "Whatever you say, my love." He
kisses her quickly, and then watched as she turned her attention back to
her book and her cheezy goop, that now also covered his left hand.
"Beverly, will you go and get dressed already?"

"We're going out?"

"Yes. We are. So put down your _Board Of The Pigs_..."

"_*Lord* Of The *Rings*_."

"Right." He smiled. "And go get dressed. You would want me to make you
go waking around the _Enterprise-E_ in your blue satin nightgown?"

"Fine. I'll go change." She mocked him.

As she entered the bathroom to take her shower, Jean-Luc picked up the
cheezy goop, and started taking it to the replicater to dispose of it.
From the bathroom he heard, "Oh, and Jeany?"

"Yes, love?" he called back.

"Leave my food alone."

"Jean-Luc! This is your idea of an anniversary gift?" He looked at him
with disbelief. "You *have* to be kidding me..."

Mr. and Mrs. Picard stood at the holodeck enterence. Inside, there was a
large city, but not like the cities they were used to seeing in the
twenty-fourth century. All of a sudden, there was a very loud crash of
thunder, and lightning struck right inside the holodeck doors.
Immediately, the wind picked up, and with the wind came rain, and with
the rain came hail.

Jean-Luc just smiled at his wife apologetically. "Holodeck's been having
some problems," he explained.

"I can see that much," she laughed. "Why don't you try that again,
Jean-Luc?" she asked.

They stepped away from the holodeck doors, allowing them to close, and
Jean-Luc began punching in some new codes. The holodeck doors reopened
and the same city appeared before them. But instead of rain and hail,
the city was being covering with a light snowfall.

"Now that's better." Beverly took Jean-Luc's arm and they walked into
the holodeck, the doors swishing closed behind them. A horse drawn
carriage pulled up in front of them on the street. Jean-Luc helped
Beverly into their cab, and then stepped inside at sat down beside her..
"Jeany, love, where are we?" She asked, while staring out the window.

He smiled, "The 1940's. Earth. Manhattan, New York City."

Once again, Beverly stared at her husband in disbelief. "Really?"

He laughed. "Really."

Beverly turn to look back out her window, and Jean-Luc held her tightly.
"Enjoying yourself, love?"

She cuddled closer and replied, "Just as long as there are too many more
problems with your program, Jean-Luc..."

He kissed her neck and then they turned their attention back to the
windows. Beverly recognized the area they were traveling through as
Central Park. And old lady was sitting on a park bench feeding almost
sixteen pigeons. A man, apparently a fisherman, was walking back from
the harbor with three large fish in a bucket. And, on a distant street
corner, they could just barely see an Organ Grinder, complete with a
monkey, entertaining a gathering crowd of tourists.

Beverly settled back into Jean-Luc's embrace to enjoy the rest of their
ride.

The carriage stopped and the door opened. A well-dressed young many,
apparently the doorman, stood at the door to help Beverly out of the
carriage. After Jean-Luc had exited the carriage as well, the doorman
closed that carriage door and the horses took off once more.

The doorman smiled at them, "Baron and Baroness Picard, we are delighted
to have you hear at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway for the opening
performance of the best musical comedy yet to hit New York City." He
lead them into the theatre and to their seats.

*Baron and Baroness*? Beverly though. From the looks of their outfits,
Beverly had already known that their characters were among the elite,
but she hadn't expected that they would be royalty. Beverly smiled to
herself when she realized that they had reached their seats, because
they also had a private box.

The doorman turned around. "I thank and welcome you once again, Baron,
Baroness. Enjoy your stay in the states."
They sat, and Jean-Luc asked, "So how do you like your present so far,
my love?"

"Royalty, Jean-Luc?" She asked, laughing. "You really wanted me
pampered, didn't you?"

"Nothing but the best for you, my love." Jean-Luc chuckled softly and
began kissing her neck.

She looked at her husband warily. "Is there something I should know
about, Jean-Luc? What did you do this time?"

Before he could answer, the houselights began to fade. Jean-Luc
whispered into her ear, "I love you, Beverly."

She smiled and whispered back, "I love you too, Jean-Luc."

For the first time, Beverly looked at her Playbill. Gilbert and
Sullivan's _The Pirates of Penzance_. She then opened it and read
'Featuring Geordi LaForge preforming, _I Am The Very Model Of A Modern
Major General_.' (See TNG episode "Disaster.") Beverly just smiled and
turned to the next page, which also caught her eye. It was a full page
advertisement reading:

"Beverly -
Happy Anniversary!
I hope all of the rest can be as
wonderful as this is.
I love you forever.
Yours always,
'Papa Bear'"

Her head turned slowly to look at her husband with eyes wide and open
mouthed.

Jean-Luc laughed at his wife and turned his attention back to the stage
as the overture began.

Beverly was shocked.

The End.
