His father was the greatest of Heroes, saving the entire universe from subjugation time and time again! Now he must continue that tradition , his powers are the same, but his outlook is different. Splash Page: Captain Marvel lies unconscious in a verdant meadow.
Surrounded by lush grass.
Narrator: What has gone before , Last Issue, Captain Marvel along
with the combined forces of the Avengers, Power Man and Iron Fist as well as Drax the
Destroyer and Firelord Battled the obscenely powerful villain, "Black Sun". But
even against the combined might of all present, Black Sun was on the verge of remaking the
universe in his own image. When Genis, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat in a last
moment gambit, defeated the master villain , turning the tables on his arch enemy by
absorbing Black Suns own incalculable power and assimilating it for his own use against
the villain. But at the moment of Captain Marvels victory a rogue player entered the
confrontation and made Genis' victory his own. Thanos appeared, knocking the unsuspecting
Genis-Vell unconscious and hurling him off into the void within the assimilation chamber,
before disappearing himself, along with the deadly and defeated Black Sun. That brings us
up to now.
Genis : "Oohh."

Genis : "Oh man, where am I? My head is killing me."
(Last I remember was getting blind sided by Thanos, then I wake up in some meadow.)
Genis looks at his costume.
Genis: (Oh man, I'm in tatters. Gotta do something about that
right now.)
Genis concentrates, using his solar energy fueled Nega-bands to
mend his shredded costume.
Genis: (Better. Now to check out where I am.)
Launching himself skyward , Captain Marvel soars into the sky, a
gleaming Photon trail following behind him.

Genis: "Looks like I'm still on Earth, but where?"
(Guess it's time to use the old Cosmic Awareness and find out exactly where I'm at.)
Genis begins to concentrate his power, when suddenly excruciating
pain cuts through his skull, rendering him instantly unconscious. He drops from the sky
like a rock, towards imminent doom when suddenly a faint thwip ,thwip sound is heard and a
net , gossamer in texture, yet strong enough to support Genis' plummeting form stops him
from a devastating fall.
Minutes later.....
Genis awakens , his vision clearing and the first thing he sees
is a certain familiar red and blue mask.
Genis: "Aaa! Man, don't DO that, you startled me outta a few
years growth."
Spider-man: " Gee, and I figured the first thing you woulda
said was "Thanks"."
Genis: "Well Spidey, that too."

Spidey: "Okay hotshot, you know me, but who the heck are
you?"
Genis :"Uhh, I'm Captain Marvel, you must've heard of me,
right?"
Spidey: "Sorry Charlie, but the Captain Marvel I know is a
few years older then you. So I think you better start lookin' for a new name."
Genis: "Huh? What are you talkin' about web-head? I've been
going by that name for the last couple of years now. You must've heard of me?"
Spidey: "No , can't say I have junior. Look, you took some
tumble from up there. You were lucky I saw you fly up there for your look around.
Otherwise you woulda been in a lot worse shape. What happened to you up there
anyway?"

Genis: "I-I'm not sure. I tried to use one of my powers, and
it felt like my head was split open with an axe."
Spidey: "Well I don't even wanna know how you came up with
that analogy , but I'd get myself checked out if I was you."
Genis: "Good idea webs. By the way, where are we?"
Spidey: "Boy , you must've really taken a hit on the noggin.
We're in upstate New York, the Catskills."
Genis; "Wow, I better head back into the city I think.
Thanks again Web slinger, it's been a pleasure meeting you."
The two shake hands, then Genis begins to fly up, when suddenly
he grasps his head and drops to the ground, Spidey nimbly leaps over and catches the
falling hero again.

Spidey: "Okay fly guy, no more ariel acrobatics for you
today, Dr Spideys orders. Listen, I saw a group of college students on a field trip over
there. Why don't you go join them and hitch a ride back into Manhattan. I'm sure you can
fit in with that crowd no problem, and these Professors who accompanied them are more
interested in themselves then the students ,so they'll never notice an extra body. Now we
just gotta do something about your clothes."
Genis: "I Think I can handle that."
K-Tang!
Captain Marvel slams his Nega Bands together, using the energy
released to re-configure his clothes into a pair of jeans and a dark T-Shirt, with his
eight pointed star emblazoned on it.
Spidey: "Not Bad. Hhmm, Sergio Valente's not gonna be
jealous of your design sense, but that'd be a neat trick to have myself."

Genis: "Cool, now where's this group of students?"
Spidey: "Just over that meadow, they're doing a field trip
on Catskill region Flora in the spring time."
Genis: "Spring? But it's late summer."
Spidey: "Man, what planet are you from ? It's spring
here."
Genis: "Uhh, if you say so Web Head, but I think you're
spandex may be squeezing your brain to tight."
Spidey: "Aww, you're just jealous cause I look better in
mine then you do in yours."
Genis: "Whatever . Listen, I'm going to make my way over to
that group. Thanks for the save, both of 'em. And by the way, I'm from Titan."

Spidey: "Huh? Man you musta took some knock on the bean
buddy, I never even heard of Titan."
Genis looks curiously after Spider-Man as he swings into the
treetops and then he shrugs his shoulders and walks off into the field towards the
students.
Minutes later Genis starts to blend in, when another young man
approaches him.
Young man: "Hiya, my name is Peter, Peter Parker. I saw you
here earlier and wanted to say hello. You must be that new exchange student from
Canada."
Genis: " Uh yeah, my names, uh, Gerry, Gerry Vells."
Peter: "Pleased to meet you Gerry. C'mon I'll introduce you
to the gang."
The two men walk over to a group of twenty somethings who stop
momentarily and shake Genis's hand as he makes the rounds, finally stopping at a certain
gorgeous redhead.

Genis: (Wow, she's a babe !) "Uh , hi, my names Gerry, Gerry
Vells."
Babe: "I'm Mary Jane Watson, pleased to meet you
Gerry."
Peter : ( Hey, I don't like the way this guy is ogling M J. Maybe
I should've let him land on his head, it might've knocked some sense into him.) "Uhh,
M J let's take a walk."
Peter grabs Mary Janes arm and gently leads her away from Genis.
Peter: "Watch this guy M J , I don't like the way he's
looking at you."
M J : "Jealous Tiger? I like that. Maybe I'll go have
another little chat with Gerry."
Peter looks at Mary Jane a little stunned, then shakes his head.

Peter: "Whatever . I gotta do something over here. I'll
catch you later."
Mary Jane suddenly feels bad about her actions, but Peter is
already walking away. So she goes back to her work, gathering different flowers for the
research department.
Genis looks around and decides to quietly help out with the
gathering of flora.
Genis: (Man, I guess I shouldn't have checked out that chick.
Pete was really cool to me and I acted like a jerk, instead of the universal protector.
Sometimes it's hard not to be a kid I guess. I fit in so well here, with other people my
age.)
Genis makes his way over to where Peter is working.
Genis: "Uh look man, I want to apologize to you. I didn't
realize M J was with you. If I had I wouldn't have checked her out like I did. I'm sorry
man."

Peter looks up and smiles slowly.
Peter: "No problem Gerry. The bus is getting ready to leave,
we should head over there and get back to the city."
Genis: " Thanks Pete, lets head out."
The trip back to Manhattan is uneventful. Once there the bus
unloads and everybody goes there separate ways, leaving Genis alone .
Genis: (Okay, I guess I'll head over to Avengers Mansion and tell
them I'm okay. I still don't feel so hot though, I think I better walk.)
Genis walks towards Central Park, as from above, Spider-Man
watches him and shadows his every move.

Genis approaches the gates.
Genis: (Waitaminute here, this isn't right. Where are the statues
of the original Avengers? Even the grounds don't look right somehow. What's going on
here?)
Genis leaves the mansion and walks down the street, deep in
thought.
Genis: (Last I remember Thanos knocked me out and I woke up here.
But maybe the question I should be asking is WHEN did I wake up, not where? )
Genis approaches a newsstand and suddenly grabs a paper, staring
intently at the date on the cover of this issue of the Daily Bugle.
Genis: "1990???"
Behind the counter of the newsstand a fat balding man chomps on a
cigar, before looking up and answering Genis' question.
Newsman: "Yeah kid, what'd ya expect, 1998 or somethin'? Now
you gonna buy that thing, or just stare at it?"

Genis: "Yeah buddy, maybe I did, maybe I did, and no I
won't."
He drops the Daily Bugle issue back on the pile and slowly walks
away, oblivious to everything around him.
Genis: (Somehow, I'm back in time. Back before Dad died, by about
three years. About five years before I was "born". Man this is to weird. I know
it's possible to time travel, but I never expected to do it myself, not this way at least.
Wow, what do I do here? No one knows me, and I don't have anyone to turn to for help here.
Let alone that I've got no where to sleep.)
Silently a shadowy figure drops down behind the brooding hero.
Just as silently the figure reaches over and taps Genis on the shoulder. The result is
explosive, and immediate.
POW !
Captain Marvel punches the figure, who slams back into the wall
behind him.

Figure: "Unngh, that hurt pal, so you got this coming
then."
Suddenly the lithe form leaps at Captain Marvel, delivering a
lightning quick uppercut that throws Genis-Vell back a dozen feet !
Boom!
Spider-Man steps out of the shadows.
Spidey: "Next time hotshot, ask before you hit."
Genis:(Rubbing his jaw) "Yeah well, maybe you shouldn't
sneak up behind someone as quietly as you did either web-brain."
Spidey: "Hey, I can't help it if you're jumpy there buddy,
though I can understand why."

Genis: "Can you? Can you understand what it's like to
suddenly wake up five years before you're born? To suddenly find everything you ever knew
to be wrong, to maybe never have happened, or maybe never to happen?"
Spidey: "Hey , uh, what is your name anyway? "
Genis: "Call me Genis, or Captain Marvel . Either one'll
do."
Spidey: "I thought I told you there's already a guy named
Captain Marvel in these parts?"
Genis: "Yeah, I know. My father."
Spidey: "Huh? Your what?"
Genis: "My father. I'm from the future Spider-Man. A future
where I take over for Mar-Vells Legacy. I'm his son and his heir."

Spidey: "Great. I know Mar-Vell. We fought together against
that nut "Basilisk"* not all that long ago. Maybe I can contact him for you
through the Avengers."

Genis: "I don't know man. If he already fought Thanos, it
wouldn't do any good. He'll have already contracted it and won't know about it yet."
Spidey: "Contracted it? Contracted what?"
Genis: (Sighs) "Cancer. My Dad dies of cancer in the not to
distant future. And nobody can help him, no matter how hard they try."
Spidey stares , unbelievingly at the young hero before him.
Spidey: "Oh man, I'm sorry buddy. I-I know how it is to lose
somebody who's a father to you . It's happened to-- others as well."

Genis: "I know Spider-Man, but it's weird, see I was born
about two years after my Dad died, so I only know him through his deeds and his logs, as
well as a few odd occurrences where he seemed to talk to me from beyond death."
Spidey: "Wait a sec shiny. You're tellin' me that you were
born years after your fathers alleged death? What kind of crazy story you got there Genis?
This makes less sense the more you talk about it."
Genis: "I...know, but my mother used my Dads DNA and had it
mixed with her own to create me. I was born just like anybody else on Earth, or Hala for
that matter. Just years after Dad passed on."
Spidey: "Wow. Okay then Captain Marvel II, we have to figure
out a way to get you home."

Spidey: "But first you need a good nights rest, you like
you've been around the moon one time to many. That was a joke Gen, smile a little."
Genis: " I will, if you answer my earlier question . Did
Captain Mar-Vell defeat Thanos already?"
Spidey looks at Genis and exhales deeply.
Spidey: "Yeah, he did. About a year ago. "
Genis's eyes grow moist
Genis: "Then I'm to late. I could've saved him, warned him
not to fight Nitro, or not to close that leaking canister of gas, but it's to late. He's
gonna die anyway."
Spidey: "Look Genis, I can't help you with what you're
feeling, but if you need a friend , someone to talk to, I'm here for you buddy."

Genis: "What I need is a place to sleep tonight. I don't
like the idea of crashing on a doorstep somewhere, and this headache is still bothering
me, but it's not as intense at least."
Spidey: "Okay, go to this address in Chelsea, a friend of
mine lives there. I'll tell him to be expecting you. He'll put you up for the night. Then
I'll catch up to you tomorrow."
Genis takes the piece of paper with the address from Spideys
outstretched hand.
Genis: "Thanks Spider-Man, I really appreciate the help. I
mean it. "
Spidey: "No problemo hero, If I didn't help you they'd throw
me out of the long john union."
The two heroes go their separate ways, Genis makes his way to a
certain apartment, where once he knocks on the door , he is greeted by an all to familiar
face.
Genis: "Peter! You're Spider-Mans friend?"
Peter: "Yeah, we have a business arrangement. He gets in all
these cool super-hero fights and I take all the pictures, making Jolly Jonah Jameson pay
me for his hate crusade against Spidey. It's sort of poetic justice if you ask me."
Genis: "Sounds like it. Listen, Spidey said it'd be cool if
I stayed here a day or two. I hope he wasn't putting words in your mouth."

Peter: "Naah, no hassle at all Gerry. C'mon in. Mrs Muggins
doesn't know you're here, and the less my landlady knows, the better, so step outta that
hallway and into Casa Parker. The couch is over there, hang tight a minute and I'll throw
you a blanket and a pillow. The fridge is over there if you're hungry, and the facilities
are that way if you need them."
Genis: "Thanks Peter, you're a buddy. You and Spider-Man
both."
The next day Genis, Peter and Mary Jane, along with Flash
Thompson and a few others are having a picnic in central park when suddenly a cry rings
out.
Voice: "Look, it's Captain Marvel!"
Genis spins his head side to side, looking all around him at the
crowded great lawn, but no one is looking at him, they're all looking up ! Following their
gaze upwards his heart practically stops as he sees a figure repeatedly slamming through a
hovering Starship, tearing it to pieces. The red and blue figure is immediately recognized
by Genis by the glowing photon trail he leaves in his wake.
Genis: "Dad."

You sure know how to write an exciting ending to these epic-type stories,
Ralph. I really liked this issue alot - especially seeing all the
guest-stars. There was a great buildup to the climax. The battle between
Black Sun and the combined forces of Iron Man, Namor, and Thor. Of course,
the conclusion was great, with Genis turning the tables on Black Sun. And
Thanos... wow. Looks like things are just going to get even tougher for
Genis after this one. Great job as always!

Hey Ralph! WOW! This was a great arc. Black Sun was a truly
powerful villain and a more than worthy foe for Captain Marvel. Thanos's gambit in the end
was equally impressive and however all that will work out has no choice but to be good! I
loved seeing so many heroes together in one place against a foe that could have wiped the
floor with Onslaught. Just keep up the good work buddy! TJB

Hi Ralph, Solid issue -- I liked the nice little character bits you threw in (like Cap's squeezing Carol's hand while on the quinjet) and the big battle at the end was breathtaking -- esp. Thor standing there, bloodied and refusing to fall. I can't imagine the mv1 Thor written better by anyone else. Genis realizing that his pride led him to near defeat is nice -- maybe he'll continue to grow. Van started his maturation and you've continued it nicely. Hopefully, Black Sun will come back somehow, someday (though who knows what Thanos does with him...). Nice arc! Barry
