His father was the greatest of Heroes, saving the entire universe

What has gone before: Over a year ago, Captain Marvel battled his greatest foe to that
point, the enigmatic and powerful Black Sun! Later, it was revealed that Black Sun was a
in truth, a sentient Black Hole given manly proportions, with a decidedly evil bent! His
plan: In a nutshell, becoming God himself, by killing and devouring the power of his
fellow sentient Stars, thus controlling all of reality! Only a last ditch effort by
Captain Marvel , alongside the Mighty Avengers, as well as Power man and Iron Fist and
Drax the Destroyer , with Firelord, saved the universe from becoming Black Suns plaything.
But what happened next was far, far worse... Captain Marvel, in the moment of his
greatest victory, was blind sided by an as yet unknown foe, one whose plans for the power
of Black Sun were far darker then even the massive villain had considered.
Captain Marvel was tossed into the abyss of the Ascension chamber in which the final
battle took place, where he emerged lost in time, several years in the past. There he had
adventures with both Spider-Man, and his father , the original Captain Marvel!
Upon his return to the present, certain subtleties began to show as inconsistent, and
these would grow... Upon his return to Titan, Genis realized that the entire world was
changed into a caricature of Earths 1950's television.
Narrowly escaping the insanity on Titan, Genis returned to earth, after battles with
the Avengers, and Quasar, Captain Marvel joined forces with Warlock and Quasar, as well as
Black Suns' protege Noctu, the Silver Dragon, and Genis' girlfriend , Angie Bourdelex.
Along the way they freed Drax and Firelord from the mental domination of their now known
foe, Thanos, the Mad Titan!
It was revealed that Thanos had made all of reality immune to deaths ravages, thus
forevermore stealing any souls from her grasp that were due to pass her way. Then the mad
Titan forced his will upon his immortal sentients , forcing them to battle deaths armies
all across creation!
Together , the group traveled across the universe to battle Thanos at his homeworld,
the very center of the Universe. In pitched battle , all the heroes were defeated by the
more powerful then ever, reality bending Thanos. Only one was immune to his augmented
powers, and that was Captain Marvel. His time spent in Earths past, during which Thanos
had begun his domination of reality, left him as the one being in the all of everything
who could not be harmed indirectly by Thanos. The Mad God had to deal with Genis first
hand, and he did.
In a pitched battle, that had both combatants calling on every last erg of their
natural power, and where Captain Marvel actually appeared to be winning, Thanos pulled a
last instant victory out of seeming thin air, impaling the charging Universal Protector on
a piece of energy charged steel, running him through, and killing him.
But Genis' story was not finished. Thanos' true foe, the being he had hurled the world
of the living into an endless war against , Death herself, had other plans.
Death forced Captain Marvel back to the living world, giving him one last chance to set
the universe aright.
Which brings us up to now...
On the battle field , on the world Thanos calls his own, where billions upon billions
of beings battle against each other continually, half the opponents immortal and alive,
the other long dead and rotting, though animated by their mistress, one among the many
leaves the battle, his rotting flesh and cadaverous body shambles towards another corpse,
though this is a fresh one. One impaled on a still smoldering shard of steel.
Without a sound, the corpse pulls the body upon the steel free, dropping both to the
ground unceremoniously. The dead thing shambles away, back to the war, as the body upon
the ground begins to glow, it's wound healing almost instantly.
Across the battlefield...
Thanos sits on a glowing throne of energy, watching the war around him in smiling
satisfaction. Behind him, and hung in the air by glowing bands of energy are the remaining
heroes who were defeated at Thanos' hands.
"So," Begins the smiling Titan. "All is as it was ever meant to be. The
Universe is mine, and the witch who spurned my undying love is now forever denied anymore
souls to travel through her realm. Such is the fate of all who cross Thanos!"
Warlock raises his head off of his chest, as he hangs by his arms in mid air.
"You are more insane then ever Thanos. You may have won the battle, but the war is
far from over."
"Hahahaha, you amuse me as ever Adam. There is nothing you can do against me. The
only one who had a glimmer of hope has been killed, at my hand. The universe is now mine.
Forever."
"You sound proud of that insane one."
"As I should be. The boy proved himself more of a nuisance then I originally
assumed him to be. His defeat is one I will cherish for all eternity."
Then, a voice fills the air around them, roaring over the din of battle that surrounds
them all!
"Then I guess you better re-evaluate all that partying stone face, cause Captain
Marvels back and ready to play!"
Sha-BOOM!
A blast of photon energy smashes Thanos from his throne, as it dissipates beneath him.
In one impossibly fast move, Genis slams into all his teammates, freeing them from their
energy bonds!
"Now!" Howls the Universal Protector! "Attack him, all of you!"
Drax and Firelord as well as Quasar attack as one, blasts of energy bombard Thanos,
hammering him back, as Captain Marvel scoops up Warlock, and streaks towards Thanos'
castle in the distance .
"How did you survive his attack Captain?"
"I-It's something weird Adam, something I'm not sure I can even relate. I-I met
death herself. And she sent me back here."
"Hhhmm, of course Genis. She realizes the fate of all of creation relies on
you."
"Uh, thanks Warlock, Like I needed any more pressure."
"No my friend, this is the truth, nothing more. You are the universes last hope.
Why are we going towards the castle?"
"I know who we have to free, rather, who you have to free. I have to get back to
the battle."
"You're going back to fight him?"
"Yes, I am. I owe that purple faced madman. I aim to give him plenty of
grief."
Warlock flies free towards the castle, and perhaps, salvation. While Captain Marvel
spins in mid air, his photon trail blazing behind him as he makes a bee line towards
Thanos, who backhands the Destroyer away powerfully, in a glowing swipe of his hand
"Back foolish Destroyer! How many times must I destroy you?"
"You'll never win Thanos!" Howls Quasar as he rakes Thanos with energy on
every frequency imaginable, "We'll keep coming at you and never stop till you're
beaten."
"Well Said Quasar!" Rages Firelord, as he bathes the Mad Titan in cosmic
flame "This battle is far from over insane one!"
"So says you herald!" Growls Thanos, as he releases an energy pulse that
scatters the heroes like wheat before the scythe!
"So say we all monster!"
Thanos turns to the sound of the voice, and receives a powerful flying blow, that
knocks him half a city block!
Kra-KOW!
"How'd that feel rock head? I hope it hurt like hell, 'cause there's lot more
where that came from." Shouts an angrily floating Captain Marvel , his Nega-Bands
glowing furiously on both his wrists.
"YOU!" Shrieks Thanos, as he rises to his feet, "It's always you isn't
it Captain? It always comes down to Thanos and Captain Marvel in the end. So be it. I'll
kill you again , and again if need be. As many times as necessary until you remain
dead."
Genis smiles, and it is not a pleasant sight. Rather one of an angry predator, who
knows this fight will have far reaching consequences, no matter who is the victor.
"Give it your best shot monster. This time , I'll be playing by your rules. Ponder
that."
As he speaks , Captain Marvel unleashes his full photonic power at Thanos, who quickly
meets the energy blast with one of his own, his own outstretched hands hurling powerful
beams outwards at the Universal protector!
Ba-KOOOM!
The resultant explosion send both combatants flying in opposite directions, and splits
the very ground beneath Thanos' feet!
Nearby, the assembled heroes rise to their feet once again, to join the battle against
the being who would be God!
"Attack him!" Yells Quasar, "And don't give up, no matter what, this is
the final battle, and it's for all the marbles!"
"Yes, the final battle indeed!" Rages the Mighty Destroyer, as he hurls
himself at Thanos, delivering an earthshaking blow that would have decapitated any other
being alive!
Pow!
Quasar throws energy spears by the hundreds at Thanos, burying him beneath the assault,
as Firelord again uses his cosmic flame to try and hold the Mad Titan at bay. Then from
nearby a great figure raises its silver head, seemingly transforming from the form of man
into a two hundred foot tall dragon. A Silver Dragon, known as Noctu.
"Fall evil one, my master will be freed from your thrall!" As he speaks, the
Silver Dragon breathes fire that turns rock to molten lava. Thanos disappears beneath the
torrent of flame that joins Firelords assault!
Inside the citadel that Thanos has erected in his own honor, a single golden warrior
fights his way through hordes of Thanos' immortal guards, using his own mighty powers to
seemingly disappear from sight, to blend with the shadows, and once there, to strike from
them. He battles onwards, seemingly striking from nothingness, with great, mysterious
mystic abilities, as would a sorcerer, a magician, a WARLOCK!
Each blow is lightning fast, as Adam Warlock fights ever deeper into the heart of the
huge castle, on a mission only he can succeed at!
"I must reach the very core of this evil citadel, all of creation depends on
it. This war won't be won by strength of arm, Captain Marvel knows that. Victory depends
on guile, as well as power." Thinks Warlock, as he pounds his way through
countless enemies.
Far above, in a small starship called the "Rapier Wit", a scared, lonely girl
watches the deadly tableau with the utmost concern. The man she has fallen in love with
has seemingly returned from the dead, and may end up back in that cold embrace again, if
this battle continues much longer. She sits, tear stained eyes locked on the view screen
before her, her body shaking uncontrollably with worry, she's so far over her head, and
she knows it.
And in another dimension, far from the prying eyes of all concerned, another figure
sits, watching the same events transpire before his blood red flesh, in a mystic pool
floating in mid air before his eyes, as his left hands raises a goblet to his lips, he
drinks deeply, and returns to his viewing.
On the view screen in the "Rapier Wit",Angie watches as Genis is being
pounded by Thanos' power blasts, when suddenly a Quantum shield appears between the two,
allowing Captain Marvel the chance to fly free!
"Thanks Quasar, I needed the breather."
"No problem." Shouts the Quantum powered champion, as he narrowly dodges a
blast of Thanos'.
"Bah, enough talk!" Roars the Destroyer, "More destruction, yours Thanos!"
He hurls himself at Thanos. Carving a mile long ditch in the ground with their bodies,
as he furiously assaults the mad Titan, pounding him unmercifully with all the power at
his command!
Ba-Ka-Krooom!
"Aaaarrgghg" Shrieks Thanos, as he smashes Drax backwards, with a double
handed blow. "When will I be rid of you Destroyer? When I reduce you to the ash from
whence you came?"
"Not even then evil one, never will you be rid of me!" Is The Destroyers
answer, as he unleashes bolts of unabated force into the deadly Titan, actually forcing
him back a step!
Ta-KOOOM!
"Then let us put it to the test Drax, shall we?"
Thanos' eyes flash, and suddenly the Destroyer is reduced to dust, that settles to the
ground in an image of Drax' body, a scream of anger echoing on the winds around him...
"Ha! One down, the rest of you to go!"
Together , the assembled heroes stand ready to battle Thanos, fists at the ready.
"You may have killed Drax, you monster," Begins Genis, "but the rest of
us are ready to do what ever it takes to end your madness for all time!"
"Bah, you are laughable boy!"
Thanos waves his arms, and suddenly all the powerful heroes, save Captain Marvel, drop
to the ground, screaming in agony!
"Hahaha, I have removed their bones Captain, they now are the spineless worms they
resemble so much. A shame you are not so easily disposed of. "
"You madman!" Roars Genis, as he leaps at Thanos! "I'll do whatever I
have to, to finish this , you monster!"
All around the two warriors the din of battle continues, as it does all around the
universe simultaneously. The Undead ghouls of Death herself Vs. Thanos' immortal minions.
And at the center of it all is Captain Marvel and Thanos, locked in deadly combat!
The only sound is their grunts of strain, and the echo of their blows bouncing off of
each other.
Captain Marvel ducks beneath Thanos' flaming right hook, as Genis delivers his own
powerful right, to Thanos' midsection . Thanos hammers his closed left fist down on Genis'
back, smashing him into the dirt at his feet.
"Ha! Your end is near Boy Captain."
Thanos raises his foot, and pounds it into the ground with enough force to start an
earthquake, but Captain Marvel is not there! Genis rolls aside at the moment of impact,
avoiding the deadly, crushing blow!
Genis' rising punch to Thanos' exposed jaw rocks the Titan back upon his heels, causing
him to stumble momentarily, as Captain Marvel pushes his advantage with a stunning left
cross, followed by a powerful Thai kick to the Mad Gods abdomen ! Then, to punctuate it ,
Captain Marvel leaps upwards, into a spinning wheel kick to Thanos' jaw!
Like a mighty oak, the mad God totters for a moment, and then amazingly, inexplicably,
falls!
Boom!
Genis smiles, ready to leap in for the kill, but a memory of his last battle with
Thanos, and it's horrible ending , still linger in his mind, he hesitates, and that alone
gives Thanos the opening he needs.
The mad Titans eyes flash, and suddenly hands form from the very ground to grasp each
of Captain Marvels limbs, seeking to tear him asunder!
"Unnngh" Howls Genis through grit teeth.
"You cannot win Captain, I am in control of everything, wether it be living flesh,
or cold stone. It is all the same to me. You never had a chance."
Genis says nothing as the stone limbs pull increases upon his body, and then his face
suddenly darkens, to reflect the cosmos itself.
Within the citadel...
Warlock battles on against a seemingly endless sea of immortal warriors. The Golden
Gladiators strength is many times that of his opponents, but their numbers are without
end!
"They are wearing me down with sheer numbers alone, and they regenerate from
every blow I rain upon them!"
Adam's fists continue a shower of blows upon his enemies, but he is slowly , surely
pushed back, away from the chamber that holds his prize.
"There is only one choice left me, though I loathe to use it."
"Yes..." A voice like a serpent hisses in Warlocks mind. "Use
me. It is time to release me. Only I can grant you success in your mission."
Warlock continues to pound on his limitless foes, as he fights back a wave of revulsion
at the very thought of what in his very soul he knows he must do.
"There must be another way, I have not had to do this... This revolting thing
in many years. No! I refuse to believe I will have to resort to this again, after all this
time."
"Fool. You have no choice." The voice continues to slither through
Warlocks mind "You know it. Quickly, use me, feed me. The longer you wait, the
more dire the situation. The fate of the Universe depends on us, on you making the right
choice. Release me , now. The future of the everything depends on you!"
"I know." Sighs Warlock inwardly, "But why does
the fate of the Universe always rely on my suffering?"
As he speaks in his own mind, Warlocks Soul Gem begins to glow menacingly, and suddenly
a blast of golden energy explodes from Adams brow. To engulf every living being in the
room, hundreds of beings, who suddenly fall to the ground , their eyes wide open and
unseeing, but their immortal hearts still beat. Though there is nothing guiding them now,
their souls are absorbed into the soul gem that screams into Warlocks mind, as he drops to
his knees painfully, on the verge of agony induced unconsciousness.
"NO! I MUST NOT SUCCUMB ...YET!" He screams to the room of empty eyed
warriors, lying knee deep about him, as he hugs his head. "MUST... DO... THIS... NOW!
"
Now the soul gem on his brow is the one to scream painfully "NOOOOOO DO NOT MAKE
ME DO THIS , I AM COMPLETE, AND SATED, FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS!"
"I...do... not...care... you...will...obey...me...NOW!"
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" The gem screams in a mental howl , as its energy
rips outwards toward the object of Warlocks quest, the being hanging on the device at the
rooms center, a powerful ebon skinned goliath, who for a year has hung thus. Acting as a
living conduit for Thanos to drain and use as he deemed fit.
With an explosive roar, the device that encloses the powerful creature shatters under
Warlocks assault, and suddenly he is free, Black Sun is free! And he is angry!
Across the surface of the planet, Thanos suddenly howls in agony, as his body arcs
backwards . Nearby Captain Marvel suddenly strains mightily against his bonds of stone,
and shatters them! His cosmically aware mind allowing him to perceive the exact
nano-second to strike!
Pa-KOOM!
"Now Thanos! We end this"
Genis streaks in, and pounds Thanos with a powerful flying right.
Thoomm!
"Uggh, yes boy protector , let us finish this foolishness."
They face each other for the final time, Genis in a modified fighting stance, his hands
at the ready, while Thanos merely lunges at him, all power, and no finesse.
Instantly Captain Marvel parries Thanos' lunge, sliding to the left, and pounding on
Thanos' back with a glowing left fist, while sweeping the Mad Titans right leg out from
under him to drop him to the ground unceremoniously .
"You DARE! " Roars Thanos!
"Yes madman, I dare! I always will dare. No matter what, I will ALWAYS
stand in your way, you monster!"
Thanos fires a bolt of energy from his left hand, tossing Genis back, but the Universal
protector rolls with the blast, and rights himself immediately, firing photon power from
both hands, and this time, Thanos is smashed backwards from their fury!
"What?" The surprised Titan asks no one in particular.
"Stunned big guy?" Genis smiles venomously, "I figured as much. Guess
you didn't realize you lost your stolen extra power, did you?"
Thanos stops , dead in his tracks and stares at Captain Marvel. The realization of the
Captains words sinking into his mind, and then , suddenly with an inarticulate howl of
anger he leaps once more at Captain Marvel, his hands reaching for Genis' throat, as the
Universal protector ducks beneath the mad Titans lunge, tossing him over his shoulder to
the ground quickly.
"I will crush you boy, and I will send your broken soul back to that witch who
spurned me."
"You're starting to sound pretty empty Thanos. Give it up, you're beaten . As
always , you laid the seeds for your own defeat. When you threw me into the depths of the
Ascension chamber * , you set yourself up to be defeated now. You 're the one who made me
immune to your stolen power, and the warped version of reality you created. It's all your
own fault , you sick demented psychopath, I pity you. You had the Universe in your hands,
and all you could do with it was seek revenge on an abstract creature who wanted nothing
to do with you. You're pathetic."

Thanos stands, his fists shakily at his sides as he prepares to unleash his incredible
natural energies at Captain Marvel. When suddenly , in a roar of a thousand, thousand
thunders, a new player makes his appearance , one whose arrival is foretold by the inky
starlit blackness that appears upon Captain Marvels face. And then, Genis smiles.
Ba-KOOOMM!
The ground splits beneath their feet as rock and stone shatter to rise up tower-like
between the two antagonists, separating them, as Black Sun arrives amid a bolt of ebon
energy.
"YOU!" He roars at Thanos! , As he grips him by the throat! "You have
much to pay for Titan! And you will!"
Thanos smashes his way free of Black Suns grip, and begins to trade blows with the
giant powerhouse.
"I defeated you before fool, and I will do so again, easily."
"No Thanos, this time it will be you who falls before my wrath, this time
forever!"
Suddenly Black Sun seems to grow before Thanos' eyes, his body spreads and becomes
formless.
Nearby, Genis' cosmic awareness flashes again, and he instantly takes flight! He
streaks towards where his compatriots lay, as he approaches he sees Eros is already on his
feet, and surprisingly, Drax is reformed .
"I guess any thing Thanos stolen power had affected is reverting back to its
former state, spinning outwards from this planet exponentially."
"Starfox! Eros! " He shouts as he approaches the shaken brother of Thanos,
"Get everyone to the ship, hurry, we have no time left."
"Why Genis, what's happening?"
As they speak, the surface of the world around them begins to explode, huge gouts of
flame streak upwards from its surface, as the planet begins to crack and groan painfully.
"What's happening is that Black Sun is returning home, where he belongs."
Answers Genis grimly.
Instantly the Universal protector is airborne, and streaking towards the citadel, where
Warlock was last seen.
Below Captain Marvel, Thanos stares incredulously at the ever expanding amorphous
blackness before him, and suddenly he realizes what is happening , when he feels himself
being tugged towards the growing blackness
"NO!" He roars, "You will not succeed Black Sun. Thanos will yet rule
the day."
Then, a powerful voice reverberates all around Thanos, burning the very air with its
power.
"That is where you are wrong, you evil , selfish godling. No longer will the
universe suffer your insanity. Though my plans were decidedly less then altruistic, never
would I have sunk to your depths of depravity. Your time is over, permanently."
And as he speaks, , Black Suns form expands all the faster, as Thanos drops to the
ground , his fingers leaving deep gouges in the stone beneath them, as he is pulled
inexorably towards Black Sun.
Nearby, the citadel of Thanos shatters under the massive pull being generated , as
Genis streaks through its halls, as the very walls crumble about him. His face mirrors the
cosmos, as his Cosmic Awareness leads him directly to a still insensate Adam Warlock, and
the motionless bodies that surround him.
"C'mon Adam, we've gotta get outta here."
He lifts the silent and limp Warlock to his shoulder, and streaks upwards, shattering
what's left of the cold stone ceiling in one blow, his photon trail blazing behind him, as
the thing that was Black Sun now begins to fill the sky itself!
Below, Thanos struggles with all his unholy power against the pull being exerted
against him, but this time, even his evil might is not enough, as suddenly his hands tear
free of the planets surface, its cold hard stone crumbling beneath his grip, as he tumbles
end over end helplessly into the very darkness that makes up Black Suns essence, a living
Black Hole!
"Damn you Captain Marvel." Is all that escapes Thanos' lips, before he
disappears, into the swirling miasma that is now and forever truly Black Sun.
Nearby, Noctu, the Silver Dragon in human form, stands and stares at Black Suns fury,
then with a solemn look over his shoulder at the heroes he accompanied here, he transforms
once more to his Dragon shape and lifts upwards majestically, to fly into the very heart
of Black Suns roiling mass, disappearing with finality...
Aboard the "Rapier wit" the assembled and bedraggled heroes are met by Angie
, who helps them through to the cockpit of the small space craft.
"Where's Genis?" She shouts above the escalating noise to Eros.
"He's coming." is his only answer, as he rushes past her to the controls,
seating himself, as Firelord sits next to him.
"What's going on out there?" The groggy Xandarian herald asks.
"Black Sun is going back where he belongs, he's becoming what he always has been,
a black hole. And we're all going to join him if we don't get the hell out of here."
Then , Angie screams, "Look! It's Genis!"
All heads turn, as the streaking Captain Marvel approaches the tired and battered ship,
fighting with every bit of his strength to enter the small ship. But Captain Marvel is
exhausted, his power at its lowest ebb. Slowly, he begins to tumble backwards towards the
event horizon of the growing Black Hole, that now has encompassed the planet below .
Then, suddenly, a hand is there, gripping Genis' arm and heaving both he and Adam
Warlock towards the ship, The Mighty Destroyer has come to the rescue.
Inside the ship , Quasar takes Warlocks comatose form from Genis, and leads him to sick
bay.
"Thanks Quaze, but we have to get out of here now, I'm going to the cockpit."
"Why? Eros can handle it, you've done enough."
"No Wendall, he can't , only I can."
As he speaks, again his face turns to the stuff of the stars, and Wendall Vaughn nods,
understanding.
An instant later, Genis is in the cockpit, pushing past the Destroyer and Firelord, to
take the latters seat.
"Eros, give me full power, and I need all the command controls."
"What?"
"Don't argue Eros, just do it, or we're all dead. Trust me."
He turns towards Starfox, again showing his cosmically aware countenance.
And then he grips the control yoke, and fires the throttle to full, bypassing every
safety on the ship, and shutting down every energy draining system on board. The little
craft roars towards the rim of the swirling miasma before them, that now has grown truly
starlike in its proportions, and then , cosmic awareness still coloring his face, Captain
Marvel dives the ship off the Black Holes rim, and towards the very center of the
collapsed star, at the very last possible second, his eyes closed and his mind wide open,
Captain Marvel skips the ship across the Black Holes horizon, slingshotting it into the
depths of space at hyper light speed, its engines screaming in painful protest!
All aboard collapse from the strain of the past months, that has finally come to a
head, and passed. With a sigh of relief, Captain Marvel sinks his pain wracked body into
his chair , and mercifully passes out.
Epilogue 1
Days later...
The crew of the Rapier Wit relaxes as the small craft makes its way home, towards
Titan, and then Earth. Warlock sits at a table in the ships galley, sipping tea with
Quasar and Genis, as Firelord and Drax man the controls. Angie sleeps in her cabin.
"This adventure was the most harrowing by far my friends. I had my doubts that we
would survive, let alone win the day."
"I know Adam."Answers Quasar, "But we did win. And maybe if we're lucky,
Thanos will never return."
Captain Marvel smiles, "Well I doubt we'll see the big "T" for a while,
but him permanently gone? I have my doubts."
"Do you sense him anywhere in the universe with your cosmic awareness
Captain?"
"No Adam, I don't. And I did try. I have to say, for now at least, we're Thanos
free. Hopefully , if things go our way, Wendells hope will come true."
Then, suddenly a figure appears in the air before them, emanating from Quasars Quantum
bands.
