Angela drowsily watched her uncle carefully crush two white pills into a fine powder. He then poured the powder into a glass of water and stirred it until it had dissolved.
"Here, sit up," Angela said, tugging on Jack's sleeve.
Jack struggled into a upright position and Uncle Will handed him the glass of cloudy liquid.
"Drink all of it. Slowly," Uncle Will added, scrutinizing Jack as he carefully brought the glass to his dry lips. Jack grimaced as the medicine met his mouth; the liquid was bitter and chalky. Still, he drank it all without complaining.
"Good." Uncle Will nodded, after Jack had downed the medication. He then continued, "Jack, you were allergic to your old medicine. It caused your fever to spike and for you throat to swell up and start to close."
"Yeah, I noticed," Jack wheezed, his voice raspy.
Will smiled slightly. "We're going to keep you awake a little longer, until the swelling in your throat goes down, all right?" Jack nodded. Will then turned to his niece and nephews. "Someone needs to stay with Jack and keep him awake until the swelling goes down. After that, I still want to have someone watching him until we can get his fever to break; it's still much too high. I'm going to need your help with this."
Johnny, Frankie, and Angela all readily agreed to the task. They then split the night into two hour shifts; Uncle Will would have the first, Frankie the second, Angela the third, and Johnny the last.
"Ange. Angela, wake up," Frankie said, gently shaking Angela.
"Mmm?" Angela sat up in her bed.
"It's your shift. Jack's asleep right now; the swelling went down enough. Just keep an eye on his temperature and keep a cool towel on his forehead. Johnny'll take over for you in two hours. If you get too tired, come get me or Johnny, okay?"
"All right," Angela nodded, standing up. She grabbed a book off her nightstand and proceeded into Jack's room.
Angela scooted a chair over to Jack's bedside and replaced the towel on Jack's forehead with a fresh one. She sat there, watching his labored and feverish slumber. Angela pressed the back of her cool hand against Jack's flushed cheek. She blinked, trying to keep her eyes open. With a sigh, she opened her book and tried to read.
