"Would you calm down and stop pacing?" I looked over at Johnny, who was sitting very calmly in a chair. "No. I can't." I said breathlessly. I felt like I was going to vomit I was so nervous. I knew that tonight was going to be a big deal but I hadn't really realized how worked up I was going to get. The truth of the matter was if Jack and my father didn't get along I didn't know what I would do. I know I wouldn't be able to stand having my relationship with Jack cut off because of my father. I really couldn't. I don't know what I would do if I lost Jack... I shook the thought and decided to concentrate on the here and now.
I yanked the front door open before Jack even had the chance to ring the bell. He looked a me surprised. "C'mon, we've got a lot to do."
"Ok, lets start with greetings. Jack, pretend you're meeting Johnny for the first time." I stepped back and watched the two of them greet each other. I was trying to assess how much Jack knew. Well, he introduced himself correctly, with eye contact and a firm handshake. Jack also greeted me correctly, bowing to kiss my hand.
"Good, very good. You're fine with that." I said distractedly. I glanced at the clock. It was only 3:15. Hmm...Jack's street accent was a dead give away. I didn't think I could get him to drop in entirely. "Umm, Jack? Could you maybe, umm, how do I say this....tone your accent down a little?" Jack nodded. "Like this?" he asked. I grinned. "Perfect. Now, when it comes to conversation, don't be uncomfortable just think before you speak and just be yourself." Jack nodded, attentively.
Onto table manners. We walked into the dining room, where Jeanne had laid out two place setting for practice. "We're ready to sit down for dinner. What do you do?" He frowned for a second. "Oh." he said and pulled the chair out for me. I nodded. "Good. But that has to automatic, ok? I'll remind you." Jack's table manners were another story, and it wasn't a very good story either. It wasn't until a quarter to five that I was confident Jack knew what he was doing.
"Do you have the tuxedo?" I asked, worried. "One tuxedo, as promised." Johnny said triumphantly. "Oh, thank you! Now, get someone to tend to him and help him get ready, ok?" "Gotcha." "Ok, it's ten to five. Let's do it."
Jack was hustled into one of the spare bedrooms followed by various attendants. "Good luck." Johnny grinned. I rolled my eyes and was working on a comeback when Jeanne dragged me away to get ready.
