We had excellent box seats, of course. My father wouldn't stand for any less. "I suppose you've never seen Shakespeare, huh?" Jack shook his head. "Ok, at first everything sounds really strange but after awhile you'll get used to how they talk and you should be able to understand it. If there is anything you don't understand, just ask me. And if you get bored...just try to pretend to be interested." "So I guess I can't take a nap then?" I smiled.
The house lights dimmed and the curtain began to rise. I smiled in anticipation. I love plays. I sat back and relaxed in the plush seat, my hand resting on top of Jack's. The set was fairly sparse but the actors made the play come to life. I wasn't sure if Jack was understanding it or not but he never asked me a question and he appeared to find in funny. I leaned over. "So, what do you think, so far?" Jack grinned. "I like it. It's good." I smiled and sat back in my seat.
At nine o'clock the house lights went back up and there was a 45 minute intermission. I frowned. That was a rather long intermission, I thought. I knew what this meant. This meant we would have to mingle with all of New York's upper crust that attended the tonight. In fact, they have a little room for everyone, with drinks and food sometimes. I hadn't planned for this either. Well, I knew Jack handle it. In fact, I decided I was feeling pretty confident tonight and that I was going to have a little fun with this.
Just as the adults have their little cliques so do their children. I've always hated the entire thing. Most of them are catty and fake. Usually we move and I never see them again so I normally take the opportunity to vent my anger and be particularly nasty to certain people. The girls especially. It's really rather fun. I know it's bad manners but they do the same. It's like a little game all the women play. It's all a lot of gossip and veiled rudeness.
"C'mon," I said, standing up, "we're going to mingle'." Jack looked at me, confused. "You'll see. You get to rub elbows with all the rich snobs." I teased. "I'm excited." Jack said sarcastically, as I took his arm. I grinned and we walked out into the lobby. A pair of doors were propped open and people were surging in and out. "Must be the place, huh?" "Oh, yeah." I said as we stepped inside.
I surveyed the scene of men and women dressed up for the evening. I was carefully watching the movement of some girls across the room. Jack leaned over and whispered to me, "What now?" I could see the girls talking and stealing glances at us. They then casually started moving about the room. Their path was erratic, as if it was unplanned. But it wasn't. On the contrary, it was planned down to the last detail. I turned to Jack. "You'll see." I said, my lips peeling back into a sly smile.
