 Pathfinder, Signals Jammed???

Pathfinder Signals Jammed? 
 
    Rumours abound that the signals between JPL and the Pathfinder may be being jammed are starting to surface as NASA struggle to explain why things are going so wrong so quickly.  
    Everything was going perfectly until JPL decided to send the robot out on more distant missions.  Although this should not affect the main transmitter which is a stationary object. The official explanation is that the battery power is running low, however when JPL announced that the battery power would be back to normal the problems hadn't stopped. Nothing seems to be getting through of any use. 

    The following is a log that shows the current problems: 
     

  • Sept 27th,   3:23 a.m.  >> The last fully successful transmission.
  • Sept 27th, 11:15 p.m.  >> Schedule transmission, "no signal received".
  • Sept 29th,   1:30 a.m.  >> Both Low & High Gain ordered to send a carrier signal to Earth, "Neither signal was received"
  • Sept 30th,  ??:??         >> Low gain antenna used during "Noon" Mars time in order to ensure maximum power, "No signal received"
  • Oct    1st,    4:23 p.m.  >> No signal until this time, "lasted for about 20 minutes"
  • Oct    2nd,  11:30 a.m.  >> Attempt to receive digital data from the auxiliary transmitter. "The signal turned off", then, Ordered to divert data "not clear whether these commands were received."
  • Oct    3rd,   ??:??         >> Retried digital data through auxiliary transmitter.  "no data received", then, sent commands to "put Pathfinder in safest possible state" resulted with "no signal indicating these commands executed".
  • Oct    7th,    ??:??         >> The first successful transmission since 27th Sept, "15 minutes"
  • Oct    8th,    ??:??         >> Tried to get new engineering data from the spacecraft, "not able to get signal from transmitter"

Varghina Witness Disputed 
 
    A witness to the now famous Varghina case is suffering from the wrath of a local UFOlogist who disputes whether the story is true. 

    The witness, Sousa, claims that he followed a damaged ufo for five miles along a road that Pacaccini, a well known UFOlogist, says was impossible! 

    According to Paccini, Sousa "passed by three big gas stations which are also bus stops" all this at 8am on a road that has 24 hr traffic, "Why didn't he stop and call somebody to see the UFO too?" Were all the places empty, deserted, nobody there? That's impossible!"

    How would you like to be in control of an 8 ton telescope? 
    If plans to link the Nassau Astronomical Station at Case Western Reserve University to the Web go ahead you will get the chance! 
    The idea comes from the thousands who used the NASA web site to gain access to Pathfinder's cameras. 

    Earle Luck, the astronomy department chairman said, "Basically we want to set it up as a World Wide Web site and dedicate a percentage of its time for anyone who wants to use it,". Although this will mean installing special software to control the telescope and download pictures. 

    The telescope has a narrow field of view, this makes it a bit of a non starter for viewing planets, but, distant galaxies should be captured no problem at all. 

    At a cost of $175,000+ it is expected that the telescope that was originally built in 1957 will be online in the summer of 1999.
