Unbelievable

An X-FILES Story

by Katrina M. Ostrander

I: The Beginning

Danielle Rhodes was sitting in her living room in Coffeyville, Kansas. She was reading the local news, trying to forget what happened one month before, when she called it quits with her lover Tim.

There was a knock on the door. She opened it. Darkness plunged its teeth into her neck.

#

Dana Scully was waiting for her date, Fox Mulder. With a knock on the door of Dana's apartment, Mulder came into a candlelit room. Scully approached him with two glasses of white wine.

Mulder took one of the glasses of wine and drank it right down. He was wearing a tux and bow tie. Scully had on a sexy, sleeveless, V-neck dress with matching black shoes.

"You look great," Mulder said as Scully poured him another glass of wine.

"Thanks. You look great, too, Fox," Scully said. "Sorry. Mulder." They sat down at the kitchen table and had spaghetti and meatballs, which Mulder discovered was Scully's specialty. They drank more wine.

#

Scully woke the next morning to see the clock read 8:21 a.m. She turned to her left and saw Mulder asleep beside her.

She hit him with a pillow to wake him up. He jolted awake.

"What's going on?" he slurred as he woke up, half naked to the waist. Funny, Scully thought, Mulder doesn't look much different half asleep than he does awake.

"We had sex! I can't believe this," she said. Mulder sat up straight in bed. He saw the concerned look on her lovely face.

"All I have to say is that last night was great," he said with a grin, putting his arm around her.

"Well, it WAS great. But that's not the point. We did something we shouldn't have. Mulder, you know the bureau regs about partners dating - we could be fired. What if I'm pregnant?" she said, worried.

"Go to the doctor in a month, see if you're pregnant. Let's not tell Skinner or Blevins and we won't be fired," he assured, hugging her. Mulder had never seen her so tense before.

She got up and got dressed. He thought the black silk nightie she had been wearing last night (before he tore it off her in the throws of passion) was better.

He got up and dressed. Scully straightened his tie.

"You going to come with me for our next case in Kansas?" he asked her as they left for work.

"Of course I will. I don't trust you by yourself."

"I thought I was the only one you trust," he said as they got into the car.

"You also thought we'd never have sex," she said.

"You have a good point," he said as they drove off.

#

At his office, Mulder grabbed the Kansas X-File and two plane tickets. He already had packed their bags four hours before.

#

At the airport, they didn't talk to each other. Scully skimmed through the file.

"The sheriff meeting us is Whitney Houston." They both smiled, amused. Scully continued, "The Executive Officer in charge is Craig Schultz. The two are expected to be married on January 5, 1999. They were engaged two weeks ago."

"Looks like we're just in time," Mulder replied sarcastically, as they boarded the plane to Kansas.

II: Kissin', Kissin'

Mulder and Scully were flying to Kansas. Mulder was in the bathroom. Scully was drinking coffee.

Suddenly, there was turbulence and Scully spilled coffee on herself. Mulder fell off the toilet. Then he ran out of the bathroom with his pants around his ankles.

He ran to his seat when Scully pointed out his underwear was showing and that he should pull up his pants.

"I didn't even realize my pants were down," he said, pulling up his pants. "I was thinking about the bad experiences I've had on airplanes." Luckily, everyone else in first class was asleep. He sat down and asked the flight attendant for a cup of coffee. Five minutes later, she came back with Mulder's coffee.

"I think we should talk about last night," Mulder said, starting a most important conversation while trying to forget about the embarrassing incident.

"Well, Mulder, I don't think we should."

"I don't really know what happened. Actually, I don't want to know what happened."

"Sometimes it's good not to know, like in this case."

He leaned over and kissed her softly on her lips.

"The only thing I know is that I love you and last night wasn't a mistake," Mulder said. All Scully did was sit there with a surprised look on her face.

She put her hand on the back of his head and pulled him to her; this time, she kissed him - a french kiss begun after 15 seconds of a plain lip kiss.

The only thing that stopped them was a tap on Mulder's shoulder. He turned and there was the same attendant that brought him his coffee.

"I'm sorry, but you're going to have to stop kissing," she said, serious. "You see, this is a family airline."

"Sorry. We'll stop," Mulder said. The flight attendant left. Mulder turned to Scully and all she was doing was smiling.

"I love you, too, but we can't enter into any kind of romantic relationship."

The intercom of the plane came on. "We are about to land the plane. Please buckle your seatbelt. Put your seats and tray tables in their upright and locked position."

Once the plane landed, Mulder and Scully walked off and went into the terminal. When they came out of the long terminal, what they saw overwhelmed them both - a giant picture of Kansas and all the cities and roads.

"Kewl!" Mulder exclaimed as they walked toward the mural. Scully looked at Mulder. He had a wondrous look on his face; he wasn't looking at her. She put her arms around him and then gave him a big kiss on the lips.

Mulder felt a tap on his shoulder. He stopped kissing Scully, turned around, and saw the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen; she was Mulder's height, had vibrant jet-black hair, mahogany skin, and a badge.

"Hi! I'm the sheriff of Coffeyville, Whitney Houston? I'll be helping you with this case. I hope you don't mind spooks. If you do, you're in the wrong town."

"We don't mind spooks...very much. We've had enough of them, God knows."

"If you're looking for a scare and romance, you have definitely come to the right place. Especially for the romance part. Hubba, hubba!"

"Well, we aren't really looking for scary stuff, it's just our job. We aren't really together."

"But I saw you kissing. Anyway, so what is your job?"

"Dana Scully and I, Fox Mulder, investigate strange, unsolved cases that come from the FBI's X-Files. Yes, we were kissing. I love kissing her," Mulder concluded as Sheriff Houston shook their hands.

She led the way to the nearest exit. Outside was a green van, a behemoth, with Coffeyville sheriff's markings. Whitney opened the passenger side door.

"Are we going to a monster truck show?" Mulder joked.

"Who wants in?" Whitney asked. Mulder shook his head. Scully shook her head. Whitney shut the door and opened the door to the back seats.

Inside there were two seats and once Mulder and Scully got in, Scully could see a small bed beside an end table that had a clock radio.

Scully sat in the furthest seat from the door and Mulder sat in the seat nearest to the door. He shut the van door and off they went into a vampire's heaven.

#

It was 12:19 a.m. Scully was sleeping on the bed in the back of the van and Mulder was in the passenger side seat, with Whitney driving.

She was driving to the nearest hotel, which was the C.O. Bryan Hotel. Whitney stopped the van, then leaned over and kissed Mulder!

"What are you doing?" he asked, amazed.

"I thought I was kissing you," she answered in a softly sensual yet firm voice just as Scully woke up.

"Are we there?" Scully asked.

"Yeah, Scully, we're here," he answered. Scully got off the mattress and walked to Mulder and kissed him on his left cheek.

"Let's go," she said. She opened the van door and jumped out but then reached back in and pulled out the suitcases. Mulder jumped out of the passenger side door.

Mulder came up beside Scully and put his arm around her, helping her with one of the suitcases. Whitney came around to them as Mulder led the way to the hotel.

Scully went to the front desk to check in. She came back with two keys.

"They only have two rooms left," she said.

"Well, you two girls have a room and I'll take the other room."

"Mulder, who says you'll have your own room?" said Scully, giving Mulder a hug and a quick kiss. "You are going to have a room with me, and Whitney will have the other room."

"I'm cool with that," Mulder said, kissing her back. Then off they all went to their rooms. Mulder and Scully went to their room first, kissing all the way in. Dana thought they were surely going to do something they would most likely regret tomorrow morning. They had already closed the door behind them when the screaming started.

#

Mulder and Scully didn't hear the screaming. They were too busy kissing and taking off each other's clothes.

"Make love to me," she told Mulder.

"O.K.," he replied. He kissed her lips, her chin, her neck, and went down from there, taking the rest of her clothes along with him.

"God, I love you so much," he said when he got back up and kissed her lips. She fell back on to the bed with Mulder on top of her.

They loved each other.

#

The next morning, Mulder, Scully, and Whitney sat front row at Danielle Rhodes' funeral. Scully and Mulder, FBI partners turned lovers, were holding hands and sometimes they would sneak in a kiss now and then.

"We are here to mourn the passing of Danielle Mary Rose Rhodes. Wife of David Anthony Rhodes. Daughter of Maria Ellen and Jacob William Rhodes," the preacher said, with total compassion.

Scully leaned over to Mulder and gave him a quick kiss and he looked at her and smiled. What had come over them? she wondered. Here they were on a case and they were acting like two giddy teenagers in love. They couldn't chalk this one up to alien influence, genetic mutation, or psychic powers. No, sir, this was the special something they had denied themselves for the last six years.

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want," the preacher began again. "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

Mulder put his arm around Scully, who was holding the small crucifix she wore around her neck. Before the funeral was over, everyone bowed their heads in prayer. After that, people left along with Mulder and Scully, who were holding hands.

Sheriff Whitney drove to the hotel with Mulder and Scully kissing each other; Whitney was obviously jealous. Suddenly, the monster van came to a stop and Scully landed on top of Mulder, which she didn't really mind, and he didn't mind either.

#

Inside their hotel room, Mulder and Scully were drinking wine and passionately kissing. The room was lit with candles.

"I love you, Dana. I want to spend the rest of my life with you," Mulder said. He got off the couch and bent down in front of Scully on one knee.

"Mulder...Fox...I don't know what you think we're going to be doing together..."

"Dana Scully, will you give me the pleasure of being my wife?"

III: That's What I've Been Missing

The next morning, Scully woke up to find Mulder asleep beside her. She wiped sleep from her eyes.

"Ohmygod, what have I done? Again," she moaned to herself. She felt something on her finger. She looked at her left hand ring finger and there was a diamond ring. The diamond was the size of Venezeula.

"Ohmygod!" she screamed.

"What's wrong, Dana?" Mulder asked, jolted awake. She put her hand in front of his face.

"So what. Don't you remember?" he asked her. She put her hand into her lap and mouthed a "No."

Mulder filled her in. "I asked you to marry me. You said you'd think about it. While we were making love last night, you screamed out that you would marry me. So, after we were done, I gave you that ring and we both went to sleep."

Scully got out of bed with her bare back to Mulder. She slipped on a robe. Mulder got up and put on his robe as he walked over to Scully. He hugged her.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Mulder walked over to the door and when he opened it, Whitney was standing there.

"Yes? I'm a little busy with my soon-to-be-wife," he told her.

"We aren't getting married," Scully yelled from the kitchen where she began making breakfast.

"I want you to look at something," Whitney told him as she entered the room. Clothes were strewn about. Whitney wasn't embarrassed at all.

Whitney then took her hair from over her neck and showed Mulder two tiny puncture marks on her throat.

"They look like human teeth marks," Scully said, having walked back next to Mulder with a cup of coffee.

"Vampire marks. That's what the marks are," Mulder said. Scully looked at him. It was a look that said, I don't believe you. Mulder knew Scully didn't believe him. Amazing; they had been friends and partners for so long and still she didn't believe.

"Who else could it have been?" said Mulder. "A vampire is the only one who can bite a person like this, Scully." He helped Whitney sit down on a chair. Scully closed the door.

"Maybe it's someone who thinks they're a vampire, Mulder," Scully said, walking to them. She sat down across from Mulder, who was sitting next to Whitney. "We've investigated cases like that before."

Mulder shook his head in disbelief at Scully's perspective on those cases.

Suddenly, all of them heard two gunshots. Mulder grabbed his gun, which was on the table near the door. Scully went racing after her partner, with unholstered gun in hand.

Mulder was five feet ahead of Scully. Something jumped in front of her. It sank its teeth into her neck. She drifted to the ground like a feather falling from a bird.

Meanwhile, Mulder heard another gunshot and a scream. It was coming from the hotel manager's office. Mulder rushed into Caitlyn Kienitz's office, a man's body bleeding on the floor.

Mulder picked up the phone and dialed 9-1-1. Caitlyn came through a door behind him. She saw he was using the phone on the desk.

Caitlyn had long brown hair. There was blood in her hair and on her pink shirt that was underneath her bloody blue jean overalls. Mulder, holding the receiver to his ear, whirled around and saw her.

"911. What is your emergency?" the voice at the other end of the phone said.

"This is Special Agent Fox Mulder with the FBI. I'm requesting police and an ambulance. The C.O. Bryan. Two, possibly three, victims. Three gunshots fired. No I.D. on the shooter."

"Alright, Agent Mulder, we'll send for them right away. Just hold tight," the calm male voice said.

#

Ten minutes later, the police and two ambulances came. Mulder was looking for Scully. He had on jeans and a gray T-shirt. He found Caitlyn in a stretcher.

An kind-faced officer who was just questioning Caitlyn approached him.

"Agent Mulder, I'm Craig Schultz, the Executive Officer in charge. My pals call me Craig."

"Have you seen a light auburn-haired woman with green eyes? Her name is Dana Scully. She's my partner."

"A medic found someone fitting that description about ten feet from here."

"Is she still there?"

"As far as I know. Talk to me after you find her. I already know what room you have here, so I'll see you later," Craig said as Mulder ran from him waving good-bye to him.

Mulder saw two medics on their knees. One was giving CPR to a person laying on the ground.

"Scully!" Mulder came yelling to the body on the ground. As he came closer, he could see Scully's pale face. On the side of her neck, there were two puncture marks.

IV: Matters of Life and Death

Scully was laying in a hospital bed. Mulder held her hand. One pure tear came to his eyes and it slipped down his cheek. It fell from his chin and onto Scully's lips.

Mulder softly kissed her there. Just then, Whitney, still envious with jealousy, stepped in just to see them kissing. Mulder looked over to the woman. Behind her, he saw Craig Schultz.

"How is she?" Whitney asked with mock concern as she and Craig took a seat. Whitney was on Mulder's right, and Craig was to his left.

"She's fine," Mulder replied. "She lost a lot of blood." Whitney got up and walked to the bed next to Scully's.

"I'm feeling a little dizzy. I'm going to lay down now," she said, laying down on the bed. A nurse came in and checked Scully's pulse and took her blood pressure. The blonde nurse's name tag read "JACKIE PENSON."

Nurse Penson smiled at them and left the room. Mulder smiled at the attractive nurse's back, then returned his attention to his partner. Scully's eyes opened and she saw Mulder looking down at her.

"Fox, what happened?" she asked, sounding very tired and confused. He looked at her just as weirdly as he always did.

"I don't know," he said quietly. "Did you see anything? Do you know what happened? Please, if you do know what happened, Dana?"

"No. I have no idea," she answered. She closed her eyes and slept. Mulder climbed into the bed and put his head on her shoulder.

"Whitney? Whitney!" Craig yelled as Mulder raised his head to look at Whitney.

"She's dead!" Craig screamed, checking Whitney's pulse. A doctor heard the yell and had Whitney rushed to the ER.

#

Two hours later, a doctor came to Scully's room to talk to them. Scully was awake, color having returned to her face.

"I'm Tim. Or as my friends call me, Doctor Tim."

"What's your whole name? What's going on with our friend?" Mulder demanded.

"It's Tim Shadow. Your friend, sadly, has died," he said. "Agent Scully, you lost some blood but you'll live. You can go home in a few hours."

"What about Caitlyn Kienitz and her husband?" Mulder asked.

"Can I see you in the hall, Mr. Mulder?" Tim asked, leading Mulder out to the stark white hallway.

"Caitlyn is fine, but her husband and her unborn baby have died. But happily, I have good news for you and Ms. Scully," Tim said.

"What is it?" Mulder asked, determined for an answer.

"Dana Scully is going to have a baby. In nine months, you're going to be a daddy," Dr. Tim answered with a big smile.

Mulder fell to the floor with a thud.

#

Mulder woke up in his hotel room on the couch. He heard her rustling through the kitchen.

She came out with an ice pack. He felt his head and there was a bump on his forehead.

He turned on his side with a small whimper.

"Oh, stop whining. You just bumped your head. What did the doctor tell you?" she asked as Mulder turned onto his back and Scully carefully put the ice pack on his forehead.

"He told me you were pregnant," Mulder said calmly as he sipped a glass of water she had put down at the coffee table. He thought that she knew about the pregnancy.

"I'm pregnant?! The doctor never told me!" she screamed at him.

"I guess he meant for me to tell you," he said, looking up at her. She hit him with a pillow.

"Ohmygod! I'm going to have a baby!" she said, crying. Mulder stood up and put his arms around her, hugging her tightly as she cried.

"This is our child. Our baby," Mulder said, placing his hand softly on her stomach.

"I love you so much. Now you're going to have our baby." He kissed her softly on the nose and hugged her again.

She smiled as she looked up at him. She let out a faint sigh of relief. At least she knew he would stay with her.

"Will you marry me?" Mulder asked her lovingly.

"Yes! Of course, I will! I love you!" she exclaimed, excited, as he took off her ring then put it back on.

He kissed her. She thought, What the hell am I doing? I can't get married. I can't have a child.

#

Craig Schultz was sitting by the phone waiting for Scully to call him to tell him what happened to Mulder and why he fainted.

The phone rang and he picked it up.

"Hello," he answered.

"Hi! It's Dana Scully."

"Hi! So what's going on?"

"Well, I'm going to have a baby."

"No. That's why Mulder fainted."

"Yep, sure is. And Fox and I ARE going to get married," she said.

"Alright! Where is he?" he asked.

"He's sleeping on the couch right now," she told him. "I'm sorry about Whitney."

"Well, I've got a date with the nurse, Jackie Penson. She's very beautiful, and nice," he said happily. "Got to go, she's here."

"Uh...bye," Scully said, sort of puzzled by Craig's quick recovery from Whitney's death. She hung up the phone after he said good-bye and that he'd call back.

Scully got on top of Mulder and kissed him. His eyes fluttered open.

"Craig's going on a date four hours after his fiance died," she told him as she stroked his hair. "Jackie Penson, her name is."

"Well, we can't fix that, now can we? Maybe Jackie is his soul mate. That's most likely why Whitney died," he explained.

"If I died, would you see other people?"

"Oh, I wouldn't even think about it. I love you too much."

"Good answer. I love you, too."

Mulder kissed her. Her picked her up and carried her to the bed.

#

Craig was eating popcorn with Jackie.. They were watching THE SHINING on "The Late Show."

He got up just as there was a knock on the door. He opened the door.

"You know, that's my favorite movie." Behind him, Jackie was screaming. He recognized the man biting her on the neck.

He tried mouthing the name but only "SH..." came out. Craig couldn't make himself loud enough to be heard through the screaming.

#

The next morning, Scully was comforting Craig.

"Agent Scully, say something that will make me happy," he said sadly.

"Fox and I made love last night," she said, trying to comfort him, "and told each other we'd be together forever."

"Well good for you." It was the last thing anyone said for one hour.

Finally, Craig piped up and said, "So, how's the baby?"

"Fine. The doctor said his heartbeat is excellent."

"His?"

"Yup, it's a boy."

"Does Mulder know?"

"Yes, he does. I love him so much, Craig."

"He loves you, too," he said, looking at her face. She didn't look happy.

"I know. I'm two months pregnant. Anyway, how are you doing?"

"I'm fine. So, what are you and Mulder going to name your son?"

"I don't know. I'll know when I have the baby."

"Tell me when you do, O.K.?"

"Alright." She got up, hugged Craig and left to go meet Mulder at the town's local coffee shop.

V: The Time is Now

Dana's pregnancy was two days overdue. She had quit her job and married Mulder.

"Fox, who's at the door?" she yelled for her husband. They had gotten married when she was seven months pregnant.

He had asked her to marry him again at a coffee house in Kansas after she had talked to Craig Schultz, whose finance was killed by a vampire.

Dana Scully Mulder often wondered if Sheriff Whitney Houston, Craig's fiance, had turned into a vampire herself.

"It's Craig Schultz from Kansas," Fox yelled back. Craig came into the kitchen where Dana was doing dishes. She turned around and Craig said, "You look great." He hugged her so tight, the baby kicked HIM. "I heard you and Fox finally got married."

"Yes, we did. We wanted to before the baby was born," Dana said.

"Ohhhh! My water broke!" Dana screamed, bending over with her hand on her stomach.

#

At the hospital, Dana gave birth to a healthy boy named Benjamin Timothy Mulder.

"He's so handsome and so sweet. Isn't he, Fox?" Dana said, handing the baby to Dr. Tim Shadow, who had been transferred from Kansas to Washington, D.C.

During the birth, Dana had yelled that she would never have sex with Fox again, but he knew she didn't mean it.

"He sure is," he said, holding her hand as the doctor left. "Craig, come in."

"How are you, Dana? Is the baby O.K.?" he asked.

"Benjamin Timothy Mulder is fine," Dana answered with a smile.

"Do you remember the vampires?" Craig asked Dana, serious. Fox nodded.

"Well, I know who the killer is. The head vampire."

VI: Whitney's Shadow

"Who?!" Dana yelled.

"Whitney Houston," Craig said, looking into Dana's eyes.

"Wrong again," a voice from the door said. They all turned to see him step out of the shadowy hall.

He had shut off all the lights except the one in Dana's room.

"My baby!" Dana said, reaching out her arms as she saw little Ben in the doctor's arms. Dana cried.

"I'm planning to make Ben my son," he said. Craig shouted, "You son of a bitch. Give her the baby!" Craig saw Whitney walk in beside the real lead vampire.

"Hello, Craig," she said, showing white eyes.

"Whitney, I thought you were dead," Craig said with an expression of shock on his face.

"I don't care. Give me my son, you godddamn bastards!" Fox yelled at them. Fox remembered the cross around Dana's neck. In the corner of his eye, he saw her golden cross.

Then he saw her face. Her mouth shut, her nose flaring with anger, her eyes crying with helplessness.

He put his arm on the back of her neck. He broke the chain and caught the cross as it fell from her neck.

"Give me my son goddammit!" he commanded, holding up the small cross.

"No, not a cross!," the vampire leader yelled as he turned into ashes on the floor. Now, Whitney had the baby.

"Here, you need him more than I do," she said, handing the baby to Fox.

"My baby!" Dana yelled as Fox gave her Ben.

"But I'll haunt you and your children!" Whitney yelled at Craig. "This is my curse on you!" Then, she disappeared and the lights came back on.

#

An hour later, the new Coffeyville sheriff, Craig, working with the Washington police as an expert on this case, told his deputy to question people about the vampires.

Deputy Kenny Kyles asked Fox and Dana questions.

"So, who was the head vampire?" Kyles asked.

Fox and Dana looked at each other and Dana said, "Dr. Tim Shadow."
