A DAX BY ANY OTHER NAME
Well, as you can see, I'm gonna talk about DS9 in my column.
I read recently that Terry Farrell was leaving the show and I've seen the final episode. I also know she didn't want them to kill off her character but they did - they said they didn't want to transfer her cause then they would have to transfer Worf and they didn't want to do that.
Um, TREK guys, what about Keiko, Chief O'Brien's wife? Maybe she isn't in Starfleet, but she spends a lot of time away from O'Brien and they are not transferring him, and they are married, so what's the big diff?
Now I hear they are going to replace her with Canadian actress Nicole DeBoer. Well, while that's okay, it does bring up some interesting things since Sisko was friends with an older Dax ("Old Man"). Does this mean that the symbiote carries the same memories? I do believe they said it does (sorry, I'm not up on my TREK).
Okay, same memories BUT what about the same FEELINGS? Does this mean that Worf and the new Dax will still be married, will have to be married again, have no relationship? How does that work?
They could go so many ways with this: Worf getting to know the new Dax and going to Sisko for advice on how to know or relate to someone whose form changes, or how about if she rebuffs him? Think of Worf dealing with that. Some great storylines and character development could come from this.
HOWEVER, while that may be all good and well, I'm sorry that TREK which was
the innovator with the original series (having the first on- screen interracial
kiss), why didn't they have Dax come back as a man? Think of what could have
happened then? Once again Worf going to Sisko not only to learn how to deal
with someone whose appearance changes but dealing with the fact his wife
is now a man and that whole ball of wax. Think if a new male Dax had the
same feelings and memories of the old Dax. How would stogey old Worf deal
with that???????? Would he then be "a merry man"
Though I know why they kept Dax a woman since the only other women are Kira,
who we see all the time Keiko, who we barely see and the Dabo girl Leeta,
who we rarely see, so they needed to keep Dax a woman to balance out the
show, and speaking of this, think about this: all the TREK shows - every
one only had two women in the main line-up. The original had Uhura and Nurse
Chapel (no, Yeoman Rand don't count - you saw her for maybe a minute), the
NEXTGEN has Doctor Crusher and Counselor Troi, VOYAGER has three but one's
a captain which is a new idea, and DS9 has two.
Well, anyway, that's my column for this month. By the way, saw ARMAGEDDON.
It' s a kick ass movie! Go see it.
