Seward's Words

by Jerry Seward

I just returned from Atlanta's Perimeter Mall, the first stop in the 8-city mall tour THE BABYLON 5 EXPERIENCE. For those who don't go to the conventions, it was a great opportunity for fans to meet the stars of the show and get autographs, and it was all free. While it wasn't anything really elaborate, there were props and costumes on display, face painting and tattoos, and an exclusive clip shown of the next TV movie THIRDSPACE. I had a chance to see Jerry Doyle (Michael Garibaldi).

Did everyone get a chance to see the MOBY DICK mini-series? I had to tape it while I was away to watch later. While I wasn't too impressed with the CGI effects, Patrick Stewart (STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION) was awesome as Capt. Ahab.

The theme of obsession is an interesting one and the classic Melville novel handled it best. Watching the mini-series, I thought about all of the times STAR TREK has told the MOBY DICK story. There was the original series episodes "The Doomsday Machine" and "Obsession," STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, and STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (with Stewart's Capt. Picard as Ahab). Actually, elements of MOBY DICK can be found in all of the STAR TREK feature films (the most notable being the friendly whales in STAR TREK IV).

Since Anthony's been praising DAWSON'S CREEK (which I also watch and enjoy), I thought I'd commend the daytime soap opera GENERAL HOSPITAL (which introduced espionage and science fiction to daytime back in the '70s with its "Ice Princess" storyline) for finally dealing honestly with the crime of rape. Anthony Geary is one of the most underrated actors on television and he's been acting from the heart and soul, giving some powerful performances and keeping me riveted to the screen.

That's all for now. I hope you enjoy this month's issue.
