Things You'll Never See at The Shapeshifter's
Lair
This is my personal pledge to you, my
patrons, that you will probably never see any of the following at this
page.
-
Pornography
-
That's right! You won't see any pornography
at this site so long as I live and breathe. So all you smutmongers can go
somewhere else.
-
Lousy Graphics
-
Let explain this one: You won't see any
graphics with backgrounds that are supposed to be the same color as the page
background but aren't because the text or drawing in the image bled over
to the surrounding pixels. There are two reasons for that.
-
-
I know how to make a transparent
.gif.
-
I test my pages out in a copy of Netscape
to make sure everything looks right, to make sure all the links go where
I want them, and to make sure that the editor I use is working correctly.
-
Huge Graphics
-
I know better than to make huge graphics
that take large periods of time to load. I'm pretty sure I'm not on the cutting
edge of new tech (still surfing at 14400 baud:) and I know that there are
people who are farther behind than I am. I try not to make graphics so huge
that I can only see them when I'm viewing my page from the hard drive. It's
not practical and I only have so much space in my account.
-
Blatant Spelling Errors
-
I've got a spellchecker and I'm not afraid
to use it! I probably shouldn't make any promises on this, but it's one of
my pet peeves, so I try not to be guilty of such things myself. They creep
in, but that's in part because I rarely use the spell checker (which is only
about half as useful as it sounds).
-
Truly Awful HTML Coding
-
This isn't one I can really claim credit
for, because I happen to have a truly awesome HTML editor (better, IMO, than
Netscape Gold, which is also sitting on the hard drive at the moment). A
note to all the amateur HTML writers on AOL who are setting up their personal
home pages: get AOLPress! It is a great program and it beats the socks
off of AOL's standard browser (assuming you haven't yet downloaded IE 3.0).
Now, if I could only get it to leave my JavaScript alone:(
-
Internet Explorer-specific HTML
tags
-
I know that 70% of the people who surf
the Internet use Netscape. I use Netscape when I want something better
than AOL's browser. Frankly, I happen to like Netscape. So there :P I don't
think you'll miss a whole lot by not using Netscape (other than a little
bit of blinking text on occasion), but it is what I test this page on, so
things may not look quite right in IE.
-
Java Applets
-
Yes, there is Javascript running around
here. But you will never find any actual applets here, at least not until
I find a good reason for using one:) This is mostly due to the fact that
I still can't use the things when they're on somebody else's site, and equally
due to the fact that I don't know enough Java to get myself into trouble
with, anyway.
-
FASA-copyrighted
information
-
Let me clarify that by saying that I
will never, ever, EVER knowingly post anything to my site which is
a violation of FASA's copyright, with the possible exception of a couple
of images (like the Shadowrun S:) This means that you won't find anything
posted here which contains material which has been copied from anything published
by FASA, either in the books they publish for SR or from the greatly-appreciated
website they maintain. Never. Any submissions of such material will be thrown
out without express permission from FASA. Period. The only possible exception
to this is that I'm planning on doing a conversion of Earthdawn's Wood Elemental
into SR as soon as I get the ED Magic Companion.
-
That really huge SR logo that appears
on the front page of two out of every three other SR sites
-
If you know what I'm talking about, then
you probably also know just how long that thing takes to load. It's pretty,
but it's also pretty big:) And it's cliche:)
