For as long as she can remember, Catherine has grown up under the protection and patronage of Lord St Keverne. A wealthy Cornish land owner. Under his guidance she receives the private tutelage of Friar Mark, a devout man of the cloth whom she comes to love as the father she never knew. A chance encounter on the moors has her fall into the hands of Christian Le-Prevost, Captain of the French spy ship "Aigle." Fearing she will raise the alarm, he takes her aboard his ship and later drops her at a lonely spot further along the coast.

Christian gives her his coat as protection against the cold and she is spotted by a British naval patrol, led by the brutish Lieutenant Fitzherbert. Believing the French have landed a spy, Fitzherbert pursues her across country as she makes her way to the Pengelley farm. Here she is dragged from hiding and forced with Gareth and James to questioning by the arrogant young Officer. At the last minute Catherine's quick action saves the brothers from danger and Fitzherbert leaves with his men, swearing that the next time they meet, he will not be so lenient.

The scene is now set for an adventure that takes Catherine to London and High society, where she meets some of the Regency periods rich and famous. It also reveals someone who has been waiting in the background for the right moment to steal a fortune that Catherine is due to inherit.

Aware of her heritage, Catherine embarks upon a quest to stop this madman plunging Europe once again into war, and arrives at the Chateaux of Chenon-ceaux. With a letter of introduction from Lord St Keverne she instantly becomes a friend of the owner Madame Dupin. One of the few Aristocrats who remained in France, and survived the reign of terror. Using her wealth and beauty to advantage, Catherine's quest takes her to Spain where she meet the exiled Bourbons, and secretly befriends the very people afraid of what Napoleon might accomplish. Together they plot his eventual downfall and death on St Helena.
