Tapestry: Jaxom and Ruth
Date:February 11, 1994
Crafter's rank: Apprentice
Basic Description
Varying tints and shades of soft green threads create the background for
this tapestry -- the spring-flowered valley near the Ice Lake above
Ruatha Hold. Similarly shaded blue and white threads have been woven to
create the sky above the valley. However, the background is not very
detailed, as it only provides the setting for the foreground of the
tapestry: the unmistakable historical figures of Lord Jaxom of Ruatha
and his white dragon Ruth, surrounded by fairs of firelizards. Jaxom is
depicted wearing wherhide flying gear, the brown threads so cleverly
woven that the leather seems almost to ripple as your eyes move across
the tapestry. His face carries a proud, yet joyful expression. The real
focus of the tapestry, however, is the dragon Ruth. The gleaming white
threads of his hide accentuated by soft greys for his muscles and eye
ridges dominate the picture and pay tribute to the most unique dragon
ever hatched in the history of Pern. The tapestry is bordered in a check
pattern of bright red and dark brown. On the bottom left-hand corner of
the work is the lavender and white insignia of the Weaverhall,
signifying that this is the work of Opa, Apprentice Weaver.
Detail: Firelizards
There are about a dozen brightly coloured firelizards hovering over and
about white Ruth, including a spectacular gold, woven from a thread with
an almost metallic sheen. Although well-detailed, the flighty creatures
in no way detract from the main focus of the piece.
Detail: Ruth's Eyes
Possibly the most intricately woven portion of the entire piece, Ruth's
multi-faceted eyes are of a bright blue-green, almost whirling with the
vivacity of the thread's colour.
