Wills Shield Magebane
is truly unique, a non-magical item crafted to dissipate the spells of wizards and
creatures of magic. The secrets of its creation are possibly lost forever, probably
if the mages have their way. Magebane shines like no other object, its long, diamond
shaped surface is perfectly smooth and is blazing silver with a slight tint of blue. Its creation was not one of generosity or charity. It was created for no great cause or kingly virtue. It was made for one reason: Tobie Will HATED wizards. Born in Allada, the legendary island of magic and power, Tobie Will (everyone just called him Will) was your typical young boy. Which was his problem, in a land where even children were known for mastering the secrets of magic, Will was normal. He was the constant butt of jokes and cantrips. Chairs would be magically pulled out from under him as he was about to sit, his inkwells would be spilled and he would be tripped by unseen assailants. Try as he may, he couldn't learn the secrets of the arcane arts, and he remained... Normal. An oddity in the world or the amazing. Will became a blacksmith, a mundane job for a mundane person. But he was needed and that felt good. He fell in love with a beautiful woman, only to have her leave him on their wedding day for, of all things, a mage. Will became enraged and confronted the mage, daring him to fight man to man. The mage accepted the challenge, and then trounced Will with a few simple spells. Beaten and distraught, Will went home and delved into his work like a madman, trying to forget his pain. But it didn't help much. With every striking of his hammer he imagined pounding a wizards face, every sword he forged, he imagined quenching its fire in a mages belly. He began to study the nature of magic. He began to study metals with an insane devotion. He spent years with the greatest sages and... to his ironic pleasure... mages. He began alchemical experimentation with alloys never before constructed. Anger and passion mixed with genius, lunacy and the determination finally produced a legend. He was nearing old age, but the fires in his heart burned more brightly than ever. He found the mage who had stolen his fiances heart from him and challenged him, yet again, to a fight. Now a powerful wizard, the mage agreed. When they met on the field of battle Will wore his creation proudly, a bright silver shield with a bluish tint- and the gathered spectators admired its beauty. The wizard detected no magic in it, and had no fear. Will screamed in his rage and attacked, the wizard chanted the words of power to invoke a bolt of lightning, hurling it at wills. The crowd watched awestruck as the spell struck Wills brilliant shield and merely dissipated into a haze of short lived light. Wills grinned in victory and continued toward the mage as another spell was cast at him, it too struck the shield with similar results. Will walked steadily toward the mage and pulled a sword made of the same alloy as the shield. Panicked, the wizard pointed a finger at Will and spoke a single word of power, Will could feel an incredible amount of magic rush at him, but yet again the shield repulsed any harm the spell might have done him. Reaching the wizard at last will smiled a lunatic smile as the mage, wide eyed and frightened, began to back away. Will reached back with his blade and as the wizard cowered Will kicked his feet out from under him and laughed. He had won. He had finally made his tormentors feel as helpless as he had, and all was right with the world. Wills Shield Magebane became world famous, but sadly no other items of Wills wondrous metal are known of as Will died shortly after his fight with the wizard. Magebane can deflect or dissipate any spell directed at, or affecting, its wielder if the wielders will is sufficient, or if its not, for a small portion of his life. It is not magical, so it is not known how this effect is established. All wizards of power know of Wills Shield Magebane and its alloy and will do everything they can to make sure this item does not resurface in the world. If the secrets of the creation of Wills Alloy were ever discovered, the mages would do all they could to insure this knowledge was never used. |
