The Imperial Highway is a wonder of the second Era.  Built by King Gerritt over a period of over 50 years.   This amazing piece of engineering was never meant to be the kings legacy, yet it is still considered one of the marvels of the world.

The world had a time of peace unlike any other.  Crops were bountiful, people were happy, and they were in the beginning of a golden age.  This was wonderful and yet, there were problems.

The king employed the mightiest Army ever seen.  Thousands strong and well equipped, they were ready for any event.  Yet, there was no event to be ready for, and they soon lost their edge and became soft.  Stuck at barracks and not on the battlefield the soldier spent their wages on wine and women and became quite a nuisance at any town they were near.  It became such a problem that soon town elders from across the land were rallying at the kings door and demanding that he do something about it.

Now this was intolerable to King Gerritt, with everything going so well how could this be happening?  Not only were the soldiers becoming soft and damaging property, they were getting paid for it from his coffers.  The soldiers were under contract and could not just be fired, he couldn't just go start a war...hmm....

So it came to him, to keep the soldiers busy, in shape, and away from town, he decided to build a road from Kings Crest to Mesa, to make easier the travel to his winter home.  But this was done far too soon, and the soldier started becoming a problem again, so he sent them to widen the road and cobble it.

This was done and still there was no military need for the Army.  So out they were sent again and through the decades the greatest road system was created, linking all major cities and created the lasting legacy of King Gerritt.
