This McClurg edition has dark red cloth boards with gold lettering, .and is a first edition, second state. It is exactly like the first edition, first state except for a gold acorn stamped above the publishers imprint at the bottom of the spine. For years this was thought to be the true first edition since it was more rare (probably only 2500 copies were produced), but later research concluded that after the demand for the initial 5000 copies were exceeded another book bindery that happened to use the acorn stamp printed the additional copies making this a second state first edition. |

A third state editon exists and can be distinguished by the use of gothic type in printing the name of W. F. Hall Printing Co. Chicago on the copyright page. The true first editon uses old english type.
There was probably an additional 2500 copies of the third state produced making a total of about 10,000 copies of the McClurg Tarzan of the Apes. |
The dust jacket art and title page art was done by Fred J. Arting, and is essentially the same as that used later by the A. L. Burt editon.
