Gerra, chief field mechanic for AMC, on his job as an Operator and Techno-Wizard:

Sure it’s hard, but so is any other job you might run across. I love my job. How many people can say that? I get to do everything I’ve ever wanted to do. I explore a huge part of the territory, fight the baddies, and make a good living while doing it.

The part I get the most kicks from is the spontaneity. At least once a week Lanis or Onra or somebody else will come up to me and say, "I need a weapon that will do this to these monsters at this range. Can you do it?" I just smile and say, "Sure!" The field mechanic bit is perfect for this more creative side of the business. When you’re pinned and need something in a hurry, that’s when I’m at the top of my game. No telling how many inventions I’ve put out under those situations… water sword, steam grenade… about a dozen others, too. Don’t get me wrong. It may not be in the same place anatomically as you humans, but I’ve got a heart. I’ve done my share of favors for others, too. Magic medical supplies, communications, and reading glasses help out mercenaries and civilians alike. I’m not all business; I like to help people out, especially if it will get me some profit in the future.

To tell you the truth, I never got the respect I deserved as a wizard until I found myself down here; no Techno-Wizards really do. People call you "fake wizards" and "magi-techies" and absolutely loathe you, especially Line Walkers. But, when they’re down here in the South and in Vamp territory, you become their new best friend. Of course, that’s when the price goes up…
