About Tycho Brahe


What can I say? Tycho Brahe is the man! If you don't believe me, check out some information I found on him.

FACTS (these are true)

  1. He was born in Denmark in 1546.
  2. He had a brother named Steen, a nobleman, and a sister named Sofie, who studied on the island of Hven. She studied alchemy, astrology, and medicine there.
  3. He was raised by his uncle who sent him to Copenhagen to study law in 1559.
  4. He is a Danish astronomer.
  5. He comes from a noble family.
  6. He was a Lutheran.
  7. He became interested in astronomy after seeing an eclipse of the sun in 1560.
  8. He was one of the first people to record the supernova of 1572.
  9. He traveled throughout Europe and studied at several universities.
  10. He established an astronomical observatory on the island of Ven(or Hven) in 1576. It was taken away from him by Christian IV in 1597.
  11. There is a supernova named after him. He saw it with his own instruments.
  12. They say his observations were the basis for Kepler (but what they don't tell you is that Kepler actually stole Tycho Brahe's ideas).
  13. He studied the moon's motion and showed irregularities in the moon's orbit.
  14. He catalogued over 1000 stars. No one had written a catalog that inclusive ever (it surpassed Ptolemy's, which was 1400 years old).
  15. His first work was De Nova Stella
  16. He named an instrument after himself. It's called the Tyconian Quadrant
  17. There is a crater on Mars named after him.
  18. Sorry girls, Tycho Brahe was a married man.
  19. Tycho had three sons and five daughters.
  20. In 1599, he was offered the position of imperial mathematician of the Holy Roman Empire court in Prague. His job was to come up with horoscopes for the emperor.
  21. In 1600 he offered Johannes Kepler a job at Benatek Castle.
  22. Tycho Brahe rejected Copernicus's astronomical data. He deemed it not accurate enough.
  23. He believed humans were created by God, therefore the Earth had to be in the center.
  24. He died in 1601.
  25. His last words (as recorded by Kepler) were "Ne frustra vixissee urdear" May I not seemed to have lived in vain
