First part of the Night Shift series. *************************************************** *************************** The night is my companion and solitude my guide Possession by Sarah M. *************************************************** *************************** First day as the new Night Medical Examiner for D.C. General, big responsibilities, big pay, big stress. She clutched her briefcase tightly and took a deep breath "Dr. Dana Scully? Walter Skinner, Hospital Administration, nice to finally meet you." Dana regarded this man carefully. His very presence demanded respect, at least 6'2 and at least 230 pounds of pure muscle, topped off with a balding head and very expensive wire framed glasses. Dana smiled and said "Nice to meet you too. I'd like to put my stuff away and meet my staff." "Staff? Look over here." Dana stared at a large mirror he had pointed to. "What am I looking at?" "Your staff." "Me? Just me? For this whole hospital?" "Yep, most of our major stuff comes in during the day. Just recently we've been having a real need to have a night M.E. for DOA's, Police matters and so forth. Most of our stuff is so cut and dry, we can't seem to keep night medical examiners here long. So, let me show you to your lair." Skinner said in a teasing tone. She started to settle into her new office, putting a picture of her mom and dad on her desk, installing various computer games to play when it got slow and hanging up 2 posters. One of Spiderman and one of Wolverine, people with super powers and intelligence who doubted themselves, had flaws, defects in there souls. "Well you'll definitely be a lot more fun than the last one." Startled Dana turned to be confronted by a rather handsome paramedic. His painfully straight brown hair, combed back with an errant strand straying to fall on his brow. Amazing hazel eyes, which seemed to change color as she moved towards him, that were framed by little gold wire rimmed glasses. A full pouty bottom lip and a strong square jaw supporting it all. Her eyes drifted to his left-hand ring finger, no ring, not married? Why not he's gorgeous. "Hello Dana Scully I'm the new . . ." "Medical Examiner, I know it's on your door." Dana looked at the door surprised to see her name there. The Paramedic smiled, amused "Names Fox William Mulder, the only EMT in D.C. to work alone." "Why do you work alone Fox?" Fox cringed at the use of his first name. "I even made my parents call me Mulder, either that or Fox William. Please call me Mulder. Well, my other partners thought I was, well a little spooky, thus my nickname Spooky. Remind me to tell you why some night, right now, I got a DOA fresh off Main and Vine street, all ready for you to sign for." Dana reached out and signed for the body. She liked Mulder, he seemed just her style. A bit of an outcast, but with a dry sense of humor and a stark realism that she rarely found these days. "Thanks" "Thank you. She was heavy, want me to help you lift her on the slab or are you going to conjure up the spirits of Spidey and Wolvie to help you?" Dana smirked "Well I guess you can help, just as long as you don't spook her." "Kind of hard when she's dead but, there's always a first time for everything." That was for sure, Mulder thought as he watched the petite red head slap on some gloves and grab the ankles of the body. He liked her instantly, shoulder length red hair, big glowing sapphire eyes, fine roman nose, rosebud lips. A smattering of freckles splashing her porcelain skin with color. Immaculately dressed in black pants, white shirt and 2 or 3 inch high heel boots. It's amazing how well she maneuvers in those things. His eyes glanced to her left-hand ring finger, not married? Wow, who wouldn't want to snatch her up? She's a goddess in black pants! She seems extremely intelligent, almost frighteningly so, very serious and matter of fact with a wicked sense of humor. Anyone with an MD degree who likes Wolverine and Spiderman is definitely a person to know. "1,2,3 up." Dana said as they lifted the body, "There, thank you Mulder, nice meeting you." "Nice meeting you too Dr. Scully." "You don't have to be so formal Mulder." " Ok Scully." Dana smiled then Mulder added, "See you later, I'll probably be back down here before the days over. I know this will sound funny but, I like to come down here and relax. It's quiet. Are you usually on this time or is it just for today?" "Just for today. I'll be working a 12 hour night shift M-F 6-6." Why am I tell him this? She thought. "Good, I usually work the night shift too, I'm covering for somebody today. 10-6." A loud garbled voice came through on the Walkie-talkie on Mulder's belt before Dana could respond. "10-50 on Belmont. 10-50 with possible head injury. Closest unit please report." "That's me gotta go. Later Scully." Mulder said then to the walkie-talkie, " Mulder # 15 en route ETA 5 minutes." "The Spooky mobile en route ETA 5 minutes." The walkie-talkie blared back. Dana smiled to herself. I think I'm going to like this job, she thought as she started her autopsy.
