SUMMARY: Off-Kilter veteran Paramedic Fox Mulder meets the new Medical Examiner for Georgetown Medical Center, Dr. Dana Scully. A deep friendship instantly develops as they have numerous X-file like adventures on the night shift. Seventh part of the Night Shift series. Two Months later Friday 10:30 p.m. "Hey Mulder, you're here early." "Nothing to do, what do you say we . . ." He was interrupted by his pager going off. A puzzled look crossed his face. "What's wrong?" "My Dad's paging me. Talk about strange, I didn't even know he knew my pager number." He picked up the phone and called him. "Dad, what's wrong?" "Fox William, you need to come up here as soon as possible." "Why is something wrong? Is it mom?" "No, Just come up here." The line went dead. "I have to go home to the Vineyard." "Oh." Scully said disappointed, they had a nice weekend planned. "Come with me. I'll need the support." Scully smiled and said "Ok, I'll close up shop and meet you at your place at 12 ok?" "Thanks, Scully I really need you there." Vineyard "I'll wait in the car." "No come on, they won't mind." Mulder's dad met him on the porch. Mulder went to hug him, but the older man stepped back and put out his hand to shake instead. A look of disappointment crossed Mulder's face as he shook it. "She's talking with your mom." "Who?" "Your sister." Mulder's eyes widened as he burst through the door. His mouth gaped open as the young woman stood to greet. Scully stood on the porch with Mulder's father. He was a serious distant man, not by nature, but by years of a hard life full of secrets. "Who are you?" he finally asked. "I'm Dr. Dana Scully, I work . . ." "Oh your Scully, we finally meet. Your very important to my son you know that?" "Yes sir." "He loves you but he is so out there with his ideas. He needs some one like you to bring him down from the clouds full of little green men. Hopefully you can calm him down." Scully blushed and smiled. He thinks I'm his girlfriend. Well it would look like that to any other person, wouldn't it? Most friends wouldn't take off work early for a 'family emergency' in order to come with him to visit his family, would they? Mr. Mulder flashed her a grin of pride and acceptance, then Mulder came back out. "Scully come meet my mom and my, my sister Samantha." She ran after him, meeting the rest of his family. His mother seemed like a female version of his dad. No wonder they divorced. His sister or the woman who claimed to be her, had Mulder's hazel eyes and long curly chestnut hair. She was about 5'6, with a medium frame and fine features. She resembled the family. If she is her, how'd she get here? And where has she been all these years? Mulder went to help his mom to bed, leaving Scully alone with 'Samantha'. "So your Fox's girlfriend?" She eyed Scully cautiously as she her. Scully's sixth sense went off, something wasn't right about her, something strange. Scully knew this woman wasn't Mulder's sister, but she wanted to know why someone would want to impersonate her. Mulder wouldn't believe me with out proof, he was so naturally trusting. Mulder came back and hugged his sister long and hard, then said good bye. In the car, Mulder handed the keys to Scully and buried his face in his hands. Quiet sobs issued from him as Scully started the car. Scully reached to touch him, but Mulder moved away from her. Scully sighed and pulled away. Back at the hotel, Mulder wiped his eyes and collapsed on the bed. It was such short notice they weren't able to get separate rooms and all the doubles were taken, just one big king sized bed, table and cable TV. Scully kicked off her shoes and sat next to him, remote in hand. "Look The Playboy Channel Mulder." Scully said trying to perk him up. She unwittingly discovered his proclivity for erotica when she went by his house and pushed play on his VCR. She didn't mind, it was a mind your own business kind of thing. Mulder turned around and looked at her. She is so beautiful, so understanding, she is my angel, my protector, and my pillar of reason. I love her so much. Mulder sat up and put his arm around Scully, their lips inched closer and closer, then Scully's cellphone rang. They moved away from each other and Scully answered. "Scully." "Dana, this is Skinner. I know your out on a family emergency, but we really need you here to take a look at something." "What do you mean?" "Um it's hard to explain, I'll wire you a ticket for a 9 am flight ok?" "Well as long as I'm back here before 7 ok?" Mulder looked at her puzzled. "Something came up with a body that they need me to look at. Will you be alright till I come back tomorrow night?" "Sure, how much trouble can I get into in less than 18 hrs?" Scully smiled, loads of it she thought and packed a few items. 12 noon Sunday "This man's blood is curdled like jelly, something has thickened it!" Scully said removing her gloves and face shield. "What?!" Skinner asked, looking at the chart on the man. Heart failure due to blood clots was his official cause of death. "Some toxin or something caused it. How was it introduced to his body and what it is yet to be explained. Hopefully it will be shortly, I sent for a stat tox and Micro screen an hour ago." Scully's beeper went off, that's a vineyard number, she thought as she dialed it quickly on her cell phone. "Scully, who paged me?" "Scully . . ." "Mulder? Mulder? What's wrong?" Skinner looked up at her, raising an eyebrow in surprise. "She's gone, I lost her, I couldn't save her again. I've disappointed my father again. She's gone." "Who? Your sister? What happened to your sister?" "Some man, he took her. I shot him, it hit him full in the chest, but he fell over the bridge and took her with him." '"Mulder I don't . . . Mulder I'll be there in a few hours ok. I'm sorry about your sister Mulder." "I know bye." "So that was your family emergency? I don't remember your last name being Mulder?" Skinner teased as Scully turned her cell phone off "He found his sister." "The one taken by aliens? Really?" "Yep. He wanted me to go with him to verify it was her with medical data and for support." "I didn't know you and old Spooky were that close. He usually scares most people off with the sister thing." "Hey everybody's a little weird." She said, turning to the tech that handed her the tox and micro reports. "Thank you." She scanned over the report, her eyes widening slightly "A retro virus? Airborne impeded by cold? Hmm." "Have you ever heard of this before?" Skinner said, a look that oozed cover of JAMA dancing in his eyes. "No don't worry, I'll document this thoroughly when I get back. This is going to require more tests to identify it. I need to finish this preliminary report excuse me." 4 hrs later Vineyard Scully was stepping out of the plane when she got paged. What Mulder? She thought as she answered the page "Scully." "Ms. Scully, this is Bill Mulder. There is a situation we need your help with." "What sir?" "It seems the police have found the man responsible for that woman who pretended to be our daughter's death, but Fox William is locked in a freezer with him." "A freezer? Where?" "A meat packaging plant, down the street from . . . here let me give directions." She jotted them down and hailed a taxi. When she arrived the place was surrounded by cops. "What happened?" she asked Mr. Mulder, who looked more somber than usual. "They lost the guy, but Fox William is still locked in the freezer. They are opening it now." Scully walked inside as the police finished blowtorching the door open. Mulder was sprawled on the ground in obvious pain, but strangely not experiencing the usual signs of hypothermia. That's odd, Scully thought till she saw his eyes were swollen and purple, just like the body in the morgue. The medic's drug him out, wrapping him in a special blanket to raise his temp, the heart monitor suddenly flat lined. "Get the paddles quick, he's going into cardiac arrest!" The virus! He was exposed to the Retrovirus! Oh my god, he'll die if he stays wrapped in that thing! Scully thought as she ran to the medics. The medics tried to quickly start an IV. "His blood is clotting fast!" Scully reached in and grabbed the blanket off Mulder. "You need to step back ma'am, and give that back he's going into hypothermic shock!" "No he's not! He was been exposed to a retrovirus and unless he is put back in the cold . . ." "Look, it's hypothermic shock, no virus!" "NO you look! I'm Dr. Dana Scully I have seen this before, and if you don't do what I say YOU WILL KILL HIM!" she said pushing her way through and pushing the gurney back in the freezer. "Paddles!" Scully said authority in her voice. "Clear!" ZAPP!! "Anything?? Clear!" ZAPP! "Faint Pulse ! Now what?" My how their attitudes change just by flashing credentials, Scully thought as she instructed them on what to do. After days of various therapies, blood thinners and plasma expanders, Mulder regained consciousness. "Scully." "I can't leave you along for a minute, can I?" Mulder smiled weakly then said "She wasn't my sister Scully." "Who was she?" "No, what was she? I believe she was an alien/human hybrid. She melted right before me and my dad after she was pulled from the river." "Melted?" Mulder nodded "And when I shot the guy who 'killed' her, he had green blood and it hurt my eyes, like poison." He's delirious, but that man was carrying some kind of virus. He needs to be found and quarantined till he's no longer a carrier. "He said she's alive. My sister is alive, I just have to keep looking." Mulder said, shifting a little and reaching for Scully's hand. She held his hand and petted his hair till he fell back to sleep, then left to check his latest test results.
