F-117A Stealth Fighter

Developed for the U.S.Air Forc by Lockheed Advanced Development Company, better known as the "Skunkworks," the F-117A Stealth Fighter is the first operational aircraft to exploit low observable stealth technology. Designed to penetrate dense threath environments at night and attack high-value targets with pinpoint accuracy, this single-seat fighter played a key role in Operation Desert Storm.

Powered by two General Electric F404 turbofan engines and fly-by-wire flight controls, the F-117A has excellent performance, maneuverability, and flying qualities. It is equipped with sophisticated navigation and attack systems integrated into a modern digital avionics suite. A wide variety of tactical weapons can be employed.

The F-117A Stealth Fighter first flew in June 1981, and Lockheed began making production deliveries to the USAF in 1982. With concurrent development and production, the aircraft achieved initial operation capability in October 1983, only five years after go-ahead. Operational experience has since demonstrated the outstanding quality, reliability, and maintainability of the F-117A.
